FXR4 rear shock rebuild-able?
« on: April 24, 2013, 03:16:19 PM »

My right rear shock is leaking on my FXR4. I serious doubt I can find another, are they rebuild-able and if so where?

Try this old thread for some related info:   http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=19509.msg312150#msg312150

Also, you could contact the folks at Fox to see if they can still service those factory shocks.  They have an 800 number for inquires.

grc's response is a good one. Try Fox, they might be able to help you out. I know for a fact they do not build those shocks anymore as they stopped street shock production. Also give a call to Howard at Motorcycle Metal, he might be able to rebuild them for you. My shocks have 13K on them and I am planning on upgrading to Howard's JRI B shocks sometime soon. The shocks only last so long anyway and the JRI B's are fantastic and fully adjustable. Put the money you would on the rebuild to a new set of shocks made for you.

You are welcome. Here is more detail:
Ed,

A basic rebuild of our shocks cost is $40 per shock, plus parts.
The basic seal kit for most Fox shocks are $15 per shock.

If they have never been rebuild, I would recommend having them rebuilt.
The harshness you feel could be a internal problem. (Nothing major, usually O-ring failure)

We can take in your shocks anytime.
They can be shipped to our address below.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Here you go guys, much cheaper than new shocks. And Fox shocks have a very good reputation and they are made in U.S.A.!

I'm HAPPY to know this information ..... my FXR4 has never had the shocks rebuilt, front or rear ...... oh boy

I should have NEVER said that !!!
Was doing some maint on the bike yesterday .... I see the right rear shock is leaking .....

I called Mike Carver, he said the turnaround time is about 2-3 days depending on what comes in before my shocks will get there.

HOWEVER,  I'm leaving on 7-2  for ND and Montana .... I've decided to ride with it the way it is.   I asked Mike his opinion on this.  He said that it could be ridden a long time before it would cause any real damage to the shock and that the ride would just get worse.  That I'd loose my dampening  over time as the oil leaks out and then I'll have a bouncy/springy ride.

I thought it was too close to my departure date to risk it  ......  so AFTER my trip I'll take both shocks off and send them to him for rebuild.

While they shocks are off I might as well do the front forks too, since they have never been opened since the bike was new      OMG,   maybe I shouldn't have said that either     ???
