Fuel Pump Light?
« on: October 06, 2006, 10:11:04 AM »

I have noticed lately every time I start my bike. the fuel pump light will come back on after it starts. It will stay on for a few seconds then go out. It will run fine and I can ride all day with no problems. Any one got a idea whats going on? I was thinking it might be my fuel pump going out or a clogged fuel filter? I haven't taken it to be checked out by the dealer.
I was told that the fuel filter and pump both are located inside the fuel tank and that if you ever have to get it replaced you need to also have all the mounting screws replaced that hold the cover on or it will leak every time it is full.

Do you mean the engine light? If so, if it comes on then goes back off after starting it means that the ECM has a trouble code stored in it. You had an event that caused the code to appear but the event is no longer active. The ECM will store the code for several start cycles before it will stop coming on. See this thread on how to retrieve the codes from the ECM via the speedo readout.

That happened to me several weeks ago while on a road trip.  Next day I found the problem - my voltage regulator went belly up on me.  Thankfully it did work intermittently (and thankfully it was not the stator) or the bike would have been dead on the side of the road.  I was able to ride it several hundred mile to a dealer and get it repaired.  I'd check to see what trouble code you're throwing before you find out the hard way what is wrong.  Good luck.

I believe the fuel light is controlled by a pressure switch when the pump build pressure the light goes off,  maybe you have a fuel pump pressure issue?

HD Dude,
Great info!! Everyone needs a copy of this. Good easy to follow instructions. I ran the check and got 2 codes. P1353 Front Cylinder no combustion EFI and P1357 Internitten secondary Front EFI. I think it may be a bad injector anyone else got a idea what the problem is?

A no combustion code could be something as simple as a loose plug wire. An injector problem has its own codes but It could be? Check the plug wires first.
Once again thanks!  I will give the plug wires a check. If that isn't it I am going to take it to the dealer.

I had a similar problem on my 05 RKC, pulled the plugs and found the front one gapped to 0.020". Re-gapped and ran fine and no codes. That was at about 2000 miles......
