When She is Hot?
« on: July 01, 2013, 09:05:39 AM »

Any 13 Ultra owners experiencing this?

When intially start out on a ride, I am not getting this rubbing whining noise.

When she heats up....and I'm down shifting ....Pull in clutch and around 30mph down to like 15 mph ...Coasting/low idle , I can hear this noise?? :-\

There is a little drive train noise, actually at all speeds but you can hear it better at lower speed. I believe it is a combination of factors like the clutch plates still contacting lightly when coasting and the transmission still spinning. I anticipate some of the noise on mine diminishing when I get the proper fluids installed. Got the first service on mine this week and ditching the Syn3, going with Redline in the transmission and primary which made my '07 much quieter and smoother.

Possible front brake pad contact with the rotor?  My 04 CVO pumpkin does this once in awhile.  Check your pad clearance.

Head on over to your friendly dealership and ask to ride another similar bike, then see if it does the same thing.  Without the ability to actually hear what you're hearing, it's impossible to say if what you have is normal or not.  The bike is not going to be perfectly quiet while coasting, but it also shouldn't have loud grinding or whining sounds.

How old is the bike and how many miles are on the clock?  What fluids are you running in the primary and trans?  Has the belt tension been verified to spec?  Are the brakes dragging?  Etc.

Btw, whining can also come from things like an overly tight primary chain (which gets tighter as it heats up) or an inner primary bearing (IPB) starting to fail.  Anything we can suggest on this thread is purely a guess of course.  If you have a mechanic/technician you trust, have him/her check it out and give you their opinion.  If other similar bikes don't make the same sound, let your dealer know you want it fixed.  Some will work with you, some will blow you off.  If they blow you off you can contact H-D corporate and ask them to intervene.  Good luck.

There is no such part.  There is a primary chain tensioner however.
