Speaker upgrade
« on: July 07, 2013, 06:36:23 AM »

OK guys i need some more help. I want to upgrade my sound system. I would like something that I can just change out and not have to do all kind of cutting to make it fit. I want to try to keep everything looking stock on my CVO Road Glide Custom. I am thinking 2 amps, one for the front and one for the rear. Then change out all six speakers. I am not sure what size the stock speakers are on this bike. I have been looking at J&M Rokker, Hawg wired, Focal and Hybrid Audio. I want my wife to understand the music at highway speeds. She can hear the stock system but not understand it.
 So what would you recommend?
 Thanks for the help,
Mark

He Rig,
I have just the J&M 3 Way front fairing speakers and a J&M 2 channel amp, and not the Rokker series, and I ride with a half helmet 12inch wind splitter windshield with D&D fatcat 2 to1 perforated wrap baffle and I hear my Ipod great at 90+mph!  J&M has every thing you need for your front end and are due to release a speaker for your saddle bags this summer, you can find some pretty good discounts at the aftermarket parts guys, and there is even a vendor on this site that's got great prices too!  David H.

Thanks, as of right now I am thinking of Hawg Wired speaker. I may do the speaker first then the amps. We will see. I may just bite the bullet and do it all at one time. I am thinking of the 6.5 up front and 5X7 in the bag lids. I want something that is water proof. I get stuck in the rain regular. Hell I live in South La, LOL.

The ARC/Focal as well as the HAT/ Biketronics stuff is real nice. I have the HAT 6.5" in my fairing and 2 sets of HAT 6x9's in my lids powered with the Biketronics BT4180 amp. I like it overall however I will be changing the HAT 6.5" to the Focal KRC65 6.5". I'm happy with the AMP and the 6X9's from HAT. Having had two bikes side by side I could hear the differences between the two as the Focal 6.5" are very clear sounding. I like the HAT 6x9's over the Focal's, more Bass IMO.

With two sets of Focal's in front of you powered by a ARC amp it will be stupid loud. I see Focal and HAT now both have replacement speakers for the bags. I have not heard either set yet however I would imagine they sound good. Add the Focal replacement speakers and a second amp and you'll be content.... for awhile.....  ;)

What is everyone using for an adapter ring to mount aftermarket speakers?
I ordered a set of Polk mm571's and no way they fit. Bolt ring is long ways away from working.
IS there an adapter plate out there for the 5x7?? Or another brand of speaker that falls into place?
What about wiring harness? Is there a "plug-to-spade" harness to utilize the stock plugs and avoid splicing the stock harness?

Thanks

G.

I just want to add to the J&M comments.

I have a '09 SERG O/B.  I bought the J&M 7.25" speaker upgrade kit, around $220, can't remember for sure.  I did not want to get involved in the amp issues, just the KISS system for me.

I could hear my original speakers at lower speeds, but even then the quality was not all that great.

I installed the 7.25" J&M speakers with their adapters and under fairing sould insulation.  The intall was straight forward.

I'll have to say that for the couple hundred bucks and an hour of work, it's one of the best upgrades I've made.

Don't get me wrong, an amp would make it better, but for me the sound is a great improvement of the stock '09 SERG speakers.  I can hear the music very well at 80 mph and on the talk radio station I listen to while going back and forth to work for traffic reports, I can clearly hear them talking without having to guess what they're saying.

I know there are many other system companies out there to choose from, but at the time J&M was highly recommended.  I "still" recommend them for my application.

The choice is always yours.

Good luck with your choice for speaker upgrades.

Like Dan, I upgraded all 4 of my speakers to the 7 1/4 J&M Rokker's and did not change anything else because of the cost. At Hwy speed, they sound great........and I'm almost deaf. Did mine 'bout 4 yrs ago, maybe B4 J&M hit the chitter  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

I installed Hog Tunes speakers in the fairing and the rear pods, also the base ports in the rear. Then I did the sub woofers in the lower fairings with  40.5 amp to power the them. I still have one extra channel left on the 40.5 for another set of speakers which will go in to the saddle bag lids ( in the future )  Over all, the sound quality is superb,  it is nice and loud with out any distortion, I hear my tunes crystal clear on any highway, has good base, and the system is dead reliable. It is all plug and play and I did the install my self.  So for just less than $1000 you get a nice middle of the road, reliable system that sounds great.  Less $$ should be spent on this part of the bike and more on the suspension in IMOP. Cheers.

Well I think I am going to go with the Biketronics HAT's 6.5's for the faring and the 6X9 for the bag lids. I will hold off on the amp's for now. I will change those later, I have other things I need to get done first.
