Steering shimmy with tour pack
« on: August 26, 2013, 07:44:36 PM »

So I installed the detachable 2 up TP setup on my '11 SESG and packed to leave to Milwaukee this morning. Wife gets on and we take off to a very scary low speed shimmy in the handlebars. She jumps off and the shimmy is still there. SO I unload the TP and the shimmy is gone. We have ridden 2 up before with no problems, the only difference today was the TP. I even weighed the luggage and it came to 26lbs which should be fine. I adjusted the shocks for the additional weight, but I did notice that the preload knob does not click like it is supposed to. I haven't touched these shocks in 3 years since I originally adjusted them for solo riding when the bike was new. Only has 8000 miles, so the front end should be OK....I'm thinking the shocks are bad??? Solo riding the a solo TP mount loaded is also fine--did that last year riding to Maggie Valley. Anybody have ideas or am I right--the shock suck?

Mike, the shocks suck.

Other then that, I go from single rider/seat, no tourpak to 2 riders tourpak and bag on top loaded. And every combo in between, including single seat, forward tourpak - rear tourpak etc.

I don't have any more then normal shakes or shimmies.

Something I noticed though the other day, test ride after putting the engine together. No lowers, tourpak, saddlebags or side covers.
At higher speed and throttle the bike handle and shook like I have not felt before. Put all the trim back on and it was back to normal.

So I guess I need to start out with shocks when I get home......

Also I gave Jim at Metal Dragon a call last night and he suggested checking the steering bearing with the fall away test......I was going to do that adjustment this winter since I think it is at 10K miles. He thinks if they are too loose it might cause this also.....I just think it is strange that it is fine with the wife on the back and no TP.

I can see it now....adjust steering bearing and new shocks....yeah..that should cover it.

Even when I have had the "death wobble" the fall away test was still correct on mine.

Same here Mike. Same mileage too. First noticed it two up and loaded. I could take my hands off the bars at low speed and could watch them shake (unloaded). Dealer says (suprise here) don't take hands off. Duh. You could feel the bars shake in your hands. Anyway, they tightened the preload to shut me up and its all gone.

Glad to hear that worked for you...I will try that as soon as we get back from Milwaukee on Monday......

At this point she followed behind me in her truck with the luggage so it's just 2 up around town and then I'm solo for the ride home so I should be fine until we get back.

Thanks for the info :2vrolijk_21:
