Factory Head pipe cat Pic
« on: July 17, 2013, 09:46:33 PM »

I took my head pipe off my 2013 ultra to remove the cat. I cut it in half where the cat is and really didn't realize just how restricted the cat made it. It's no wonder it gets so hot. I removed the cat and tig welded it back together tonight. I'll get it back on tomorrow night. It should run a lot cooler. By the way my wife asked me what I was doing and I told her, she says you pay that much for your new bike and your to cheap to have the local dealer put the true duals on your bike you priced. Then she walks away shaking her head. Got to love her :2vrolijk_21:

It's an open honeycomb, the saw cut makes it look more restricted than it is.  At stock airflow levels, even with a Stage 1, there's no restriction in flow.  There are several dyno comparisons out there verifying this.  There are also several threads on several forums detailing the issues in removing the catalyst from a stock headpipe.

O2 sensor x-talk is the biggest worry/issue removing the cat. It can take an otherwise decently running bike and increase fueling in the low rpm area which will negatively affect fuel mileage. Upper rpms will run lean and hot due to lean fueling caused by emissions calibration exacerbated by the freer flow through the engine/exhaust.
May run cooler due to excess fueling.

I was ready to post paragraphs about that.  You've distilled the issue to a few short sentences very well.

I planed on having it dyno tuned before riding it do you guys think it would be ok if that was done or should I just go with the true duals. When I bought it I got 2 dyno runs and 1 dyno tune in the deal. I just figured that being the head pipes on the true duals doesn't have the cat I would be good. Any advice would be great I don't want to trash a new 110.  :2vrolijk_21:

True duals will run cooler with a tune but they will not make the power that a good 2-1-2 head pipe will.
Here is a comparison between true duals and the fullsac 2-1-2 both with crusher mellow mufflers.
103 motor with Andrews 54 cams, no other engine work.
