Saddlebag locks ?
« on: July 30, 2013, 11:41:47 AM »

Probably a stupid question but......does the key work to lock the bags?  My key works for the main head lock and the tourpak but not the bags?  FOB works with everything.

My keys have always worked to lock the saddlebags on five baggers so far.

It definitely should. It does feel different than the ignition or tour-pak when locking/unlocking. To me anyway. I've rarely used the key for bags, but its only a small amount of turning in the lock cylinder compared to the other locks, doesn't feel as smooth either. If it doesn't turn at all when placed in lock then they aren't keyed correctly.

I met another CVO member in Mitchell SD and he had the same issue.

Should work. The keys worked on my old Street Glide. Maybe the put the wrong cylinders in the bags. I always use the fob.

Ditto, possible it was missed by the "quality" control folks at the factory.

:-\ (I always use the fob).............Don't forget that if you have an Ultra or another tour model with the lock/unlock switch on the console,  it still works to UNLOCK your bags if you didn't lock up the ignition switch too.

My ignition lock was kind of sticky when bike was new but is smooth now after being locked and unlocked many times same thing with the bags when using the key. Hope yours does the same.

I wonder if the lock is meeting resistance when trying to turn because of the auto locking mechanism giving a fight.

I have a strange version to this one:

A buddy bought a '13 Road Glide (no CVO), it has a lock on the gas cap cover, my '11 SERGU does not. He asked me to bring my key and meet him as he forgot his gas cap key at home and was low on fuel. The first question I had for him was "Does the ignition key not open the gas cap lid? Answer was either "no" or he only carries fob, i forgot which one. Second question was "Why do you think my key will work in your gas cap lid". Answer was. "it will". It did! Now, I happen to think the gas cap lid lock is stupid, but what makes it even more idiotic is that ANYONE with a Harley key can open it. Sooo, was it MOCO theory that only non Harley riders steal gas? Or where they hoping that no one notice this secret and that when you locked your gas lid, only your key would open it!!!??? :nixweiss:

Any Harley key will open it. It has been set up like that for as long as I can remember. I found out about this on a day ride when I forgot my keys. Stopped to get fuel and had no key. Axel said no problem and came over and unlocked the gas cap for me. That was back in 1987.

As far as the HD key opening the saddle bags on the newer models??? I have no idea. I think I will go up and check Saphire to see. I know on my 2009 SE ULTRA they did. It seems to me they should and we should not have to reley on the electric locks
