Front forks Bottoming out
« on: August 15, 2013, 10:46:38 AM »

Hey Guys, Can anyone offer any information on why my front shocks would bottom out when hitting a small bump. My bike is an '01 WG2. I drained the oil from the lower legs yesterday. They looked to be somewhat clean and just a bit off color. I don't think just changing the will fix a thing.
Do these bikes have a history of front shocks wearing early? Thanks in advance

what weight oil did you put back in there?  if you put the stock type e back in, you should drain that and use a heavier oil.  i like the screamin eagle heavy myself, though others will go with a 50/50 mix of stock and heavy.  avoid the race, its like concrete.

then of course, you can go aftermarket and have a lot more options in reference to viscosity.

you may not think that changing oil would make a big difference, but it really does.

I havn't put anything back in yet. I wanted to hear from you guys first. My Panhead mechanic also said to go to the heavier oil so I will do that. Does anyone have a maintenance book that tells the amount to put in?

On the opposite end of the bike I noticed some sludge at the base of one of the rear shocks. I need to find out if the stock Fox rear shocks are oil dampened. If they are I think I have sprung a leak.

Thanks for the input.
