My 2010 just failed.  Same scenario, running fine, then a sudden s,out of low end noise.  Sounds like a bad crank.  The decision now is to rebuild or drop in an S&S motor.  I'm willing to pay the difference if any from ESP.  Thoughts?

How many miles on yours?  Sorry for the bad luck.

Just over 15,000.  It literally died 50 yards from my mechanics trailer at a bike event.  Needless to say he was a bit embarrased and put it in the trailer immediately.

Man, it seems like an ungodly amount of engine failures!
These times are when you owned your own shop and knew how to fix these things so they're finally reliable.
But you sure feel good that first day you pickup your shiney new CVO!

Just frustrating that HD can't put out a more consistent product.  Especially with their flagship bikes.  I'm disappointed that I need to go to a different engine to make my bike reliable.

The grass is not greener with the 103
Had a set of heads here from a 2013 with 240 miles on it and the lifter rollers were already frosty.

Would be interesting to know why some blow up and some don't, my 2010 ultra just turned 65,ooo and it's still going strong. Never had a gasket broken apart until I put a set of lifters in about 3000 miles ago... after reading all these threads.... but I didn't see anything wrong with the old ones.

There was a rash of failures in 2008-2009 as bikes hit 20-25K and from what I recall there was no rhyme or reason.

Different oils, riding styles... they just DID.

As my '12 is at close to 22K I pay close attention to noises now.. paranoid?.. maybe. but no foil hat yet.

Mine has run flawlessly since I picked it up at the dealer.  And while there has always been a little noise from the motor (it is a SE 110 afterall), the crank going out was very sudden to the untrained ear.  I would consider my riding to be somewhat tame on the bike too, so not sure, maybe it was just time.  Either way, It's always dissapointing when the MOCO has a problem that they seem to know about and does not spend the time and $ to fix it.  If I was the ESP Company, I would be a bit frustrated as well.

Now my issue is to get the dang thing back on the road as soon as possible so that I can ride before the snow flies!

while I have less than 10K on my 2008 CVO RK, I replaced the lifters with S&S and the cam bearings when I did a cam swap.  My indie said it was nice to hear a customer insist on it since he tries to get every customer to do this if they're inside the motor for any reason and many balk at the price of new lifters.  From the sounds of it these lifters will fail, the only question is when and how much other damage it will cause.  I prefer to spend the money up front and have one less worry on the road

I'm hoping to just drop a S&S engine in and be done!
