loud rockers
« on: September 19, 2014, 07:37:57 AM »

Just picked up a 2014 Road King CVO , 800 miles in .
I ride on a hot day 100 degrees and put up for the night and next morning about 90 degrees , start it up and get a LOUD clacking noise from the rocker box like it has NO oil for about 3-4 seconds .
Made appt for it to go in and the weather changes to cooler temps and its quiet has a 103 cu in and Tech  says its running normal .
my thoughts were that the oil pump check valve bled off when it was hot that night .
On hot days I ride and it gets a little noisey but nothing to unusual

Welcome!
Well question then..
If they all make the racket (lofting valves and the associates lash) hot does that make this condition "normal"?

Install a good set of after market lifters and the issue will go away. The dealer will tell you that hyd lifter bleed down is normal. We know that is not true however your dealings and issue you are having with your new bike is a common one.

update

Don.
Yes without a doubt they will reduce the engine noise and fix start up rattle if you have that issue as well.

The 255 cam is rather aggressive if you plot it out, add that to X amount of crank runout and at what given degree of crank rotation you may be increasing the jerk rate on the cam as well, then add in the rather heavy valve spring pressure= loud " valve train"

Simple deal as you are aware Don  swap the springs swap the lifters and if you like the 255 leave it alone.. OR maybe degree the cam in some  retard it 3 degrees would work well..  ;)  would at least allow the cam to pull out a bit further.

I can send you a set Don if you want no issues batch on the way back from laser now.

You sell a private labeled lifter Steve. If an end user or shop was to install those in a 110 with no other changes would the SE255 cammed motor quiet down, assuming the rest of the valve train was on par? This is not a pot shot, a real question.
I have a CVO 110 and mine is noisy of course and I am one of the fools that will leave mine as close to stock as I can because I actually don't have the time to fool with it. I just want to push the button and ride. So far I love the bike with just a stage 1 other than the noise, I do have lowers also.

S&S Premium lifters w/o the limiters and a good quality set of adjustable pushrods, again such as S&S.

OK Scott
If I install those will the SE255 cams run quiet in a stock motorcycle?

2014 Road King CVO with 103cu??

I think he meant "its quiet as a 103 cu in".  At least that's what I assumed.

The 255 cams are "ticky" IME. After 300 miles on my 2014 CVO King installed 24D cams, S&S premium lifters. SE adj. pushrods. Very quiet, actually the hotter it gets the more quiet it is.

Still running the oil it came with? If so, lose it.
