Too much oil can cause what......
« on: April 13, 2014, 12:19:34 PM »

 :-\ kinds of problems.

It seems to me that it must be a good thing that the newer models have a screw in dip stick.  I'm thinkin' maybe that is the only reason mine hasn't blown out of the hole in the last 100 miles.

Took my new Street Glide in for it's initial (1000 mile service) a few days ago.  I also took along my own supply of oil for all three holes (Redline).  Got the bike back a couple of days ago,  and put around 60 or 70 miles on a ride yesterday.  In planning for another ride today,  I decided to check the engine oil (cold).

On the kick stand (Jiffy for some of you :nixweiss:),  the oil level is about an 1/8" above the (full mark when bike is upright),  which is slightly higher than the kick stand (full) mark. These being the (HOT) full marks versus the (cold).

My Service Manual says it should never be filled beyond the half way mark (cold) and never to over-fill it.

Now I'm pissed and the Service Dept. won't be open again till Tuesday.

Anybody think this is a real problem or not..........I'm going to stop by the Dealership this afternoon if they are still open and pitch a bitch about it. :drink:

It could cause increased oil misting into the breather assembly, which will saturate the air filter with oil.

"Borrow" the Turkey baster and suck some out 'till it gets to the right level.  Good luck bitching at the dealer...they put there lowest grade techs on oil changes.

I would suggest you start doing your own oil/filter changes, and never put more than 3.5 quarts in the crankcase without checking the level with the 3.5 quarts in it.  It's virtually impossible to get ALL the old oil out, so dumping 4 quarts in there will likely be too much.

I agree and I do usually change my own and when I do,  I add about the 3.5 quarts as you mention and then check it.  Obviously,  it seems the dude poured the entire 4th quart in there.  Them doing the oil changes was all part of the initial 1000 mile service check which I did want them to do.

Now if I can just sneak the baster out of the kitchen,  I'll remedy the problem and then just recommend we have ham come Thanksgiving Day. ::)

 :P
Wife gave up the baster,  said they were cheap and she would get another one.  Using a measuring cup (not the kitchen one),  I pulled about 17 ounces out of the thing.   This got me down below the full (HOT) mark on the Jiffy stand side,  and after a ride and it was hot,  it measured out right on the full/hot line.

I'm still gonna bitch about it this week with my local Service Mgr. ::)

It could very well discombobulate the nuclear resonator in the ECM causing a meltdown.   :nervous:
