two road kings
« on: September 07, 2013, 10:39:13 PM »

I have two road kings. One is a 2011 police bike and the other is the 2013 cvo aniversary number 130.I took the lowers off and put the standard Road king wind screen on. since I have two I compare them all the time. The cop bike rides like a rock. The CVO at 80 mph gets really jumpy and moves around a lot.I hate to say it but the 18000 dollar bike rides much better than the 30000 bike. It depresses the sh-t out of me.

That is dissapointing to hear. I have a 10 CVO Conv and am thinking about getting a 14 CVO Road KIng. I was hoping that the RK would ride a bit nicer than my current bike.

I too replace the windsplitter with a 20" Harley Windshield...and have noticed at 80 plus some buffetting....I attribute this to the low profile front tire...it tends to be more pronounced to sending the bumps through the handlebars and frame...

There's all kinds of things that can cause a "jumpy" ride.  Tire pressure; tire cupping; suspension problems; steering head adjustment; wind; windshield design; wheel design; wheel/chassis alignment; wheel bearings; etc.

What does "jumpy" mean? Wobbling? Not tracking straight? Wandering?

Since the two bikes have the exact same frame and suspension, the first things to check would be the tires and the fall away on the steering.  If those are OK, then the digging deeper begins.

Have you played around with the rear shock adjustments?  Mine came fully lowered, and I was a bit happier after raising the rear back up some. Might be worth looking at. I have no issues with the ride on my 13 RK, hopefully you can get your issue resolved quickly.

Well I resolved it. Sat I took the CVO to the dealer and traded in for a 2014 cop bike.I know there were 100 different things I could of changed on the CVO to make ride better , but I just felt that it should ride better than any Road King because it was a CVO.

I have a 14 SERK with the windshield that came with it.  It's rock solid at high speeds.  I know they added coil overs and the upgraded forks this year but I would attribute that to the differences we are experiencing.  I would look for another cause.

Why?

The CVO is the same bike structurally with pretty paint and a few doo-dads added on.  The only thing on a CVO that is different to impact as you're describing is the tires and wheels on the CVO bike which are sometimes different.  All the extra CVO cash doesn't buy a more refined handling machine; it just buys gizmos and more engine (which hasn't always proved to be a good thing).

I have to say I have seen a couple of others do this and I think the stock RK wshield looks better on the bike. Just my opinion.
