Clutch Cover
« on: October 23, 2013, 09:07:30 AM »

I just ordered a cover for my hydralic clutch.  Can someone expplain breifly how to change this part?  Will I have to bleed the clutch, if so how difficult is that.  I have the books on the way too, but just wondering what I am getting into.

Not sure what you are calling the clutch cover, but here goes.

If you are simply talking about the cover on the handlebar that is very simple.  Turn the handle bars to where that is closest to level, then simply unscrew and change the covers.  That fluid is not as bad as the brake fluid if you spill any though.

If you are talking about the derby cover located on the primary, simply get the bike upright and take the other one off and replace.  Should take a T-27 torx bit.

Transmission side cover?  If so pull the exhaust, unhook the hydraulic line, remove the side cover, wipe off all the gear oil that leaked out.  Put new cover and gasket back on.  Reinstall hydraulic line.  Bleed clutch.  Reinstall exhaust.

I haven't seen an aftermarket or Harley replacement for the trans side cover on the hydraulic clutch bikes, but of course that doesn't mean there isn't one.  How about a link to what you bought?

OK, I checked the PM site and came up with the unit shown below.  I assume that's what you're talking about.

The questions I would have don't seem to be answered on their website.  First, is the unit compatible with the stock Harley master cylinder and hydraulic line?  Looking at the one installation sheet they had gave me the idea this was designed to convert a cable clutch bike to hydraulic, using both their slave cylinder and their master cylinder along with their hydraulic line.  The instructions talk about adjusting the pushrod for instance, and of course the pushrod on a Harley CVO isn't adjustable.  You may want to call them and make sure before you tear the bike apart; it's best to have all the required parts on hand before you start.  The following statement is from the PM instructions, thus my recommendation that you call them for clarification.  "The PM Contour Clutch housing will require an appropriate length hydraulic line and is designed to work with the Performance Machine Contour Master Cylinder. PM can not guarantee the performance of this product if used with non-PM master cylinder."

Don't know of anything aftermarket. If you're just looking for a chrome cover (not sure what finish yours came with) I have my stock one available. It was replaced by a  Baker cover when I did the reverse. PM if you're in need of it.

Not necessarily.  I didn't say it wouldn't work, I just said you should contact them and ask if it will.

Man that Apple make a mess of my grammer sometimes:)

Anyway I read this on there directions - "Requires a master cylinder with an 11/16" bore and requires custom hydraulic line"

Any idea if the 2012 RGU has a 11/16" bore on the master cylinder?

I need to find out what the special hydraulic line is all about.  Hopefully I can call them this evening.

Jerry your hunch was right this is for a bike that has been converted.  There is some hope though, PM said they are designing a cover for the 2014 models with hydro clutch that may fit our CVO's.

Hey there, you can use this part. What you have to do is convert your CVO hydrolic set up to the standard "cable" set up. ( different actuation rod and clutch plate. ) Then this PM part will work. You will have to get a new line as well. I have seen it done to a 2005 CVO. Worked great.
