RDP with Windows 7 and IE 11
« on: January 15, 2014, 05:39:31 PM »

Hello all, over the years I've had to log into my desktop back at work and have been using the Internet to get into our network with RDP.

All has been great for years with XP or XP Pro, and even with Windows 7 until Microsoft did an update and then I lost my option to pick my PC from a list.

I can still access all my e-mails and do things there, but if I need to access drawings, quotes or just anything that is not attached to an e-mail that I can get to via the e-mail link, I'm dead in the water.

I have an older Acer One Netbook that has XP on it and that's the only thing I can get to work.

Sooooooo, has anyone else had this problem with Windows 7 and their updates?

They tell me that I can "probably" reinstall IE 10, but as soon as Windows does a new update and another IE version, I'll be right back where I started.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Are you using Small Business Server by chance?  Are you referring to the web page that you log into and the pick from a list?

You can disable the update for IE in control panel. Google it

Uninstall the IE 11 update and revert to IE 10.  Then in Internet Explorer, click on Help, then About Internet Explorer.  You will get a pop-up window like the one in the attachment below.  Uncheck the checkbox indicated and Windows Update won't automatically update you to the next version of Internet Explorer.  I'm not familiar with your particular problem, but IE 11 introduced other issues for a whole lot of us Windows 7 users.

It all depends on what you have for a network at work.  Windows RDP is not considered a safe protocol for WAN access anymore as per Microsoft’s Security Bulletin MS12-020.

Rolling back the update is certainly an option, but you might want to look into logging in via a remote VPN.  That won't give you access to your desktop at work, but it will give you access to your files on the file server.

All great suggestions.

I know at work we're not the most up to date for a company our size, but it's worked for years and why change it.  That's our motto!

I remember initially I had to install a certificate on my home computers that I logged on with to have them work with our network.

I think first off I'll reinstall IE 10 and see how that works out for me.

Thanks again to all the help...

Well I got to my work desktop with both of my Windows 7 PC's.

I used my IE 11 as installed and then used the shortcut to my web server, not sure if that's the right term or not.  Well when it came up with my login window, I went up the right upper corner and opened up the pull down menu.  Under that I picked the Compatibility View.  It then opened up another box on the the upper left with my domain shown and to the side of that it had a click the box "add" domain.  I did that and then my login window moved to the center of the screen and I entered my password.

I got my usual "old" webpage that had the option to select my work desktop from the list, which I did.  Before it would only give me the option to log into my e-mail or go to the company website.

So I picked my desktop from the list and hit connect.

From there I had full access just as it used to be.  I'm still using IE 11 and as long as it's working with the Compatibility View option, I think I'm good to go.

Thanks again for the information from you all.
