2011 road glide ultra speaker upgrade
« on: January 20, 2014, 07:11:58 PM »

The bike is a 2011 CVO road glide ultra. Is has the boom audio system. I would like to know is it possible to upgrade this system? First thing would be the front speakers then the rear speaker pods. I think the rear speakers are useless. Looking for advice on speaker replacement first. Due the replacement speakers need to be 2 ohm or will four ohm work what size etc.  David

Lots of threads on this site and on the RG site. I've been thinking about it myself. If you're wanting to keep the stock head unit then there's two ways to go about it. Ship the radio to Ironcross to have preouts installed on it for an amp or use a Line output convertor to feed an amp in which case you can then choose the speakers you want. Stock speakers on our bike are 1 ohm from what I've read making selection slim. Biketronics also has a harness for this in which you can retain the stock amp to feed a set of speakers also. I know there's a ton more info on this out there and I'm sure others will chime in shortly.

Thanks for the reply. So if I understand this correctly. I very limited to what can be done. Sounds like pre amp output and another amp is the way to go. There is a amp under the tour pack it would be nice if another amp could be put in its place and keep the original wiring. I wonder if the stock amp has DC to DC converters to raise the rail voltages in the amp above 12 volts. I don't think so that's why HD is using 1ohm speakers to get there rated power claim.thanks again for the reply it was very help full to understand what is needed to upgrade the boom system.

You're only limited to how much you want to spend. I don't think I'd put another amp under that TP due to the weather. Lots of room in the fairing on these bikes for amps. All kinds of choices as well. A local guy spent over $1k on his shark and is not real enthused about it (he like his ear buds and his helmet) and yet if you're beside or behind him it sounds great.

I have a cvo street glide 2011 and I put in the rockford fosgate 300x4 and hertz speakers in the lower fairing upper fairing also. I am not impressed with it over the stock system. I was in Milwaukee this fall for the 110 anniversary. I was told to talk with Pete from Soundz Customs. He had a booth there and I was able to meet up with him. I was recommended to him by several members on this site. Mainly tif as he also has the same bike .
Upon meeting with Pete he demo d a few different configurations for me and wow what a difference in his system. He has it so it is all plug and play no cutting of the harness. His system is not cheap , but you get what you pay for. This is why I am saving up right now to order the system shortly so I have it for spring. I have listened to others and been fooled when the bike is sitting still. It seems that at hyw. speeds is when it is more evident. There were brand new 2014 bikes there getting systems installed. He really knows his stuff and is super at taking the time to explain everything about the system.
Just my two cents as I have already spent money that did not work out.

I talked with John at Bicktronics it seem there are several option for those of us with the boom audio. He was most helpfull explained how to integrate more amps using the stock system. All it takes money! I told him I wanted to keep the stock unit. He gave me several options. From upgrading the front speakers to 6.5" and adding a to channel amp for around $550 to a four channel amp four speakers (all 7") with new pods for the back for around $1000.
