Red Shift 575 cam
« on: March 21, 2014, 01:53:51 PM »

Can you install 575 red shift cam in 05 CVO electraglide without changing springs. Put them in mine 20,000 miles ago. Bent push rod first day at Daytona. Now I'm hearing that I needed to change springs, When I installed it. With all the CVO owers here, Surely someone knows what lift cam will fit stock spring rate?  Thanks in advance,  Tony

The stock CVO103 heads are set up to easily handle over .600" lift, so your .575" lift is no problem.  There are a ton of people on this site that installed that same cam or other brands with similar lift without changing springs, including me.  Whoever told you that is obviously not familiar with the CVO103 heads.  They would have been correct if you had a stock TC88 engine.

Installed four I can think of now.  All good without spring changes.  The 103 heads are fine for that lift.

Thanks for the replies. I feel better now. Thought I did my research. My motorcycle guy said that he talked to dave Mackie and he told him that the cam was too big for the 103 without different springs. Not sure if he told him it was a CVO103. Thanks again,  Tony

Your M/C guy was misled. That cam WILL work with the standard 96"/103" beehive springs as well.

UPDATE: 575 Red shift Cam
« Reply #7 on: March 28, 2014, 03:35:28 PM »

Took 05 SEEG apart the other day. Found double springs on valves not beehive. Saw where springs were hitting rocker cover on inside. Decided to send heads to Dave Mackie and let him fix them. Looks like 575 was too much lift for this 103 cvo. Might change pistons while I'm there. I guess I will have to see what Dave thinks when he sees what I got. Got in debate with local mc guy about compression. Thought stock was 8:5. He says 10:1. Very dissapointed when found double springs. Thought 103 cvo had bee hives.

The best approach, rather than guessing or assuming, is to consult the factory supplemental shop manual for the SEEG2.  The static compression ratio is listed as 9.0:1 or 8.9:1 depending on which Harley source you believe, so I have no idea where your "m/c guy" came up with 10:1 unless you're running nonstandard pistons.  And the stock valve springs have always been dual straight wound springs (inner and outer), not beehives.

I assume what you meant is that the valve spring retainers were rubbing the rocker housing.  That was a problem not only on the 103 but more so on the 110's.  The bolt holes have a lot of slop so just slapping the housing on the head and running down the bolts can leave insufficient clearance.  The manual advises it's necessary to verify the proper clearance as you torque those bolts down, and adjust as required.  Harley eventually changed the housings to give much more clearance, so if yours continue to present a fit problem you can either grind the housings for more spring clearance or just buy the newer part number rocker housings.
