I agree with Don as a high quality ring set is very important.
Total Seal, or Speed-Pro are 2 names that are very good.
Federal-Mogul has rings that can live in very harsh conditions.
Just breakin'-balls on the ring flutter statement....nothing derogatory aimed at anyone just in case that was thought. :)

What rings are they?  Whose rings are you referring to?

They are from Total Seal.
Back cut, reduced radial wall.
The piston would also need to be designed for this type of ring.

Most if not all import type engine have the smaller metric style rings for a reason.
Less frictional drag. They will also conform to the bore easier.

My 85 Mustang with the 302 engine also had such a ring package nearly 30 years ago.

Total Seals tech line has a wealth of good info if your interested.
Call and they are more than happy to help you out.

You can't have an intelligent big bore/short stroke vs small bore/long stroke discussion without including the point of rod length/stroke ratio. If you keep the same rod length and change(lengthen) the stroke and shrink the bore, the rod length/stroke ratio also changes (becomes smaller). A smaller rod/stroke ratio moves the power band lower = more torque, just as folklore has always said it would. If you lengthen the stroke and also lengthen the rod to keep the r/s ratio the same (by moving the pin higher on the piston), and shrink the bore, the power band remains in the very same place as it was with the big bore engine. In a nutshell, the rod length/stroke ratio is the difference in the torque band, not the bore size to stroke. Its in all of the text books...   Timinator    :soapbox:

Good point! One more consideration is that the longer crank rod will shorten the piston skirts that will allow more movement and rocking of the piston in the cylinder. To make matters worse, forged pistonsare more dense for increased strenght Butt, require increased piston to wall clearances because
They expand more when hot and are noisy when cold untill they expand.
