Concerned about swing arm bag harming paint.
« on: February 23, 2014, 07:21:11 AM »

I'm getting a new CVO Breakout very soon. I'm not so sure about a sissy bar (looks) so I'm thinking about a swing arm bag. My concern is that it will damage the paint on the swing arm. Suggestions would be much appreciated.

You can get some of the clear tape (3M I believe it is) that is placed on fenders (and other places) to prevent rub marks like the MoCo uses.

I have a swing arm bag that I had on my bike until I installed the Kuryakyn swing arm license plate holder and had to take the bag off. The bag that I have does have felt lining on the straps and there was no issues with the paint on the swing arm. The main concern I had was the chrome chain guard. I just couldn't find a way to keep the straps away from the cover.

I use 3M (Scotch) Decorate & Repair Tape.  It is fairly thick, clear and stretchy. I've been using it for five years without any damage to the swingarm paint. (powdercoat)
I replace the tape about every other washing just to keep it looking good.  You can buy it at just about any auto parts store.  The biggest thing you need to look out for is
tiny gravel stones, sand and debris settling in between the saddle bag and the lower tube of the swingarm.  It rarely happens but if you ever travel on secondary roads then
it can.  I just grab the bottom of my saddle bag and pull it away from the swingarm frame to allow the stuff to fall through once in a while.  The tape is good stuff, when I tremove it and clean my bike, you would never know that it had a bag on it.

Thanks. That's great! I pick some up. Has anyone tried the Harley Davidson Swing Arm Bag?

I bought the HD Swingarm Bag last fall to stuff gloves and a light jacket in while riding. It works pretty well, I'll probably just keep it on the bike all of the time.
