GPS WIRING QUESTION-is this correct!!??
« on: February 25, 2014, 10:09:46 PM »

I have a Zumo 550 mounted on my '09 SE Road Glide. it has been previously mounted on two other bikes i used to own. When my local dealer wired it in for me last fall, they said they wire them pretty much all the same to the accessory plug under the seat. on my previous bikes, i believe it was wired to the lighter or another place within the fairing.

my previous bikes, '02 ultra and '05 SE Electra Glide, the unit would automatically power up when the ignition switch was turned on and then would power down when ignition was turned off. my my '09, i have to turn the unit on with the button on the unit and turn it off the same way. so basically it is "HOT" all the time. i first thought they wired directly to the battery, but i pulled the seat and it is wired into the accessory plug under the seat. but only the hot "red" wire is terminated to the plug. the ground is attached to the - "negative" terminal of the battery.

i am not sure i like the unit hot all the time. so i guess my question for all you electrical gurus out there is: is this wired correctly> ?? my dealer said they would wire it any way i wanted, but this is how they do most installations on ultras, road glides, etc.

the other thing that puzzles me is if the plug under the seat it tied into the accessory switch next to the cruise switch, it has no affect on the unit whether or not the bike is running. or off. i have played with the accessory toggle switch, and it doesnt turn off the unit or turn it on. like i said, it is hot all the time so i am not sure if this is a good thing or not!!

please comment as to if i should leave it alone or have it done differently. i guess you could say it is double protected the way it is. double fused. one on the garmin power wire, and the other through the accessory plug fuse circuit.

thanks in advance...

The Acc plug has a wire that is always hot (12V). It also has a switched hot lead which is only hot when the Acc switch is turned on. The dealer wired it to the always Hot lead that is why your switch does nothing.

Wire it to the cigarette lighter and it will be switched with the Ignition switch and work the way you want it to.

As noted, there are "always hot" and "switched" power options for accessories. Depends on model and year as to where and how to access them. Some offer it directly via pre-wired accessory plugs that require HD adapters or wire end plugs. Some require installing an additional wire to the 2A P&A fuse location in the fuse panel.

I'd want a switched source if available for an accessory, fused or otherwise. HD heated grips often use both a hot and switched source plus ground to activate the units. We don't want a dead battery in the middle of nowhere if possible.

You do not want your GPS to be powered all the time.  You could have an issue with the unit that could cause draining of the battery or you could leave it ON accidentally...  It will not drain the battery overnight but it won't help on a longer period...

I installed a 660 on my older bike.  Wired it direct to the battery, using an inline fuse.  My new bike, the 665 is wired so when the bike is off, the GPS shuts down.  So every time I stop for gas or whatever, I have to restart the GPS.  Having had the GPS wired both ways, I'm not sure of my preference.  Pros and cons either way.
