Noisy FXDFSE
« on: March 21, 2014, 11:49:05 PM »

New member here. I apologize in advance for the length of my first post.

I'm a new owner of a 2009 FXDFSE. Bike appears to be stock with 3900 miles on it. Have ridden an 81 FXWG since 1995 so this is a whole new experience for me. I'm not much of a mechanic but have always done my own work on the shovel.
Anyway, after riding this new bike for a couple days I heard what I would describe as a pinging noise coming from what seemed to be the front of the primary. I took it in to the local dealer (has 3 year extended left on it) and they took it apart and found the compensator sprocket collapsed and the clutch hub splines shearing. They replaced everything under the warranty and I was back on the road.

Up until now I had never really rode in any traffic but the other day I got caught in some stop and go traffic. I now noticed that the EITMS was kicking in at every stop. This made the bike run really rough which I assumed is normal. I also noticed that the bike was really running hot. So hot that when I took off from stop it would feel like a blowtorch on my right leg. I wasn't sure how normal this was but I also noticed that when the bike was in neutral and the clutch was out, there is a really loud knocking coming from the front of the primary whenever the EITMS kicked in.

I drove back to the dealership and the original mechanic and the service rep came out to listen to it. He agreed that it sounded bad but said it must be ok since he already replaced the compensator and that was where it was coming from. He seemed stumped so asked if I wanted to turn off the EITMS ( he called it the skip spark). I agreed to let him do this since he said it wouldn't matter much since "these 110's run hot anyway." They took it back and then came out and said that the mapping on my bike didn't allow them to turn it off. He said they would put a call in to Harley to see if the banging was normal and get back to me.

I've never dealt with a Harley dealership before so I'm just confused about the whole thing. Does anyone have any idea why I am getting this loud knocking? Do these bikes run like this normally? This thing sounds clunkier then my old shovelhead.
I'm including a video link to the noise. Sorry I don't know how to embed a video. You can hear the noise at the beginning of the video and then hear it go away as soon as I hit the throttle to engage the back cylinder and then hear it return after the back cylinder shuts down again.

Any help, ideas, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The knocking is the comp. There's too much time frame between pulses when running on one cyl causing extreme movement within the compensator. Bet it runs fine with both cyls firing ? Take any bike with a SE comp, pull one wire off and it will do this, even a brand new comp. Front running only will be louder clunking then the rear. Rear only, it might not make noise. Kicker is, if the ETMS shuts the rear cyl down this makes it even worse since the front has more load on it running on one cyl then the rear, if the plug wire was pulled off the front as an experiment. This translates to much lower idle rpm if front only running then the rear only running. Just another oversite on MoCo's part where they couldn't get the parts to play well with each other in this conditon. I'd be looking at tuning it so the ETMS doesnt come on so soon. Raising the idle might tame it a bit also.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes it runs fine and sounds fine when both cylinders are firing except for the crazy amount of heat even in 75 degree weather.
In my research online I haven't heard of not being able to turn off the EITMS. Everything I found said it can be turned off with the throttle or by the dealer. Have you ever heard of the mapping taking this option away?

In Arizona I expect this is beating the comp to death from the sounds of it and the first one was done in less than 4000 miles.

I'll be looking into getting this tuned as you suggested.

Yes it can be turned off. A good tune, probably (not a dealer) could help things out so the ETMS doesn't need to come on as often as well. Might be all it needs.

Does your bike have an aftermarket tuning device installed on it?  If not, you may want to get another opinion as to whether or not the EITMS can be turned off on your bike.

A good solution is to reduce your bikes operating temperature prevent the EITMS from activating unless in extreme conditions...   :2vrolijk_21:

I ride the same bike.

I installed TTS to give me control of the engine parameters, and with this it is (naturally) possible to shut off EITMS.
Mine will still go into it but later than normal. I don't want to get stuck in traffic and lose another engine, so I left it enabled.
With that mode engaged, my engine does not make the sounds that yours does though. Strange.

A tune works quite well on this bike, even one performed by a dealership.
After a half day on the dyno, mine made 90 horses and 119 pound feet at the back tire.
And it runs cooler...
That tune with the Hacker 2 into 1 exhaust were my only performance changes.

Timing , afr and idle rpms all play a roll on how the comp behaves in ETMS. Since you have TTS some of these areas may have been addressed.
