Tour Pak cable attachment
« on: April 07, 2014, 08:57:56 PM »

Hey Guys,  a friend of mine bought a tour pak off of ebay that didn't come with any hardware.  He has purchased everything needed to complete the box with the exception of the brackets that are located inside the box that the cable connects to that keeps the lid from opening up to far.  Can anyone chime in here to tell me if they know where he can purchase such a part.  Any help here is very much appreciated.

Thanks
Jimmy

Any dealership can order the parts.  What model and year bike did the Tour Pak come from?

Is the TP already drilled for all the various pieces of hardware like these brackets, hinges, latches, etc.?

This is an aftermarket box and all hardware is being installed.  I checked and found the latch connector on eharley.com.  Thanks for the info.  I will pass the eglidegoodies site on to him as well.  I like the latch they have to offer.  Thinking about this latch for mine.  I had a cable break one time and it was a miracle that the top lid didn't bust out from the bottom part.  when I opened and let go the cable broke and I couldnt believe that It didnt bust the box.   Been nervous about this ever since.

I agree the brace is the better way to go.  If he prefers the cable though the attached drawing might help.  Click on it to enlarge.

There is also a retractable (on a reel) cable in the P&A book you might see.  If you do and it piques your interest I'd suggest no further consideration.  I know of two that broke in service.  One, fortunately, did so and the lid fell against a guy standing next to the bike before it flopped over and broke anything.  The other fell all the way over and tore up the side of the tour pak though.

I actually do use one of those HD branded cables on a retactable reel.  But not in a tour pak.  Have it on the screw mount to the windshield bag on the Road King.  Use it to keep track of the gas cap key to the Kuraykyn gas cap so it can't get lost out of the bike.

Changed mine to E glide locking brace, and I'm very happy with it. I would not let go of the lid when that POS retractable reel was on it. You could play that reel wire like a banjo string I didn't trust it. Now I can lock it open and not worry.  :2vrolijk_21:

+1 My TP came with the retractable tether, but I installed the eglidegoodies locking brace. It's MUCH better!
