Hey Steve,

Bandit's website says "Golden Spectro Motorcycle Gear Lubricant SAE80w (Golden Gear 80) and Bel Ray Gear Saver SAE 75W or 80W are recommended for best results. We have also had good results from Automotive Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), either Dexron or Mercon and Torco MTL."

Do you prefer ATF over the others?

Steve,
The HD automatic tensioner?
How is the "feel" of the Bandit Clutch compared to the stock HD Hydraulic?

Thanks,
Ed

I know that many people feel that stock auto tension does not work.. Myself when the primary is set up correctly belt tension correct the auto tensioner works fine for us and we have used it on countless big inch engine builds. No one has every called or came back and said that the tensioner failed or had any issues what so ever.

The bandit works fine with the HD hyd clutch. With all of the hyd set up making sure you have the correct amount of push rod travel is the key. If its not enough well then you have to correct that. That may mean adjusting the length of the stock rod.

Steve, a quick question about the ATF you use.

I know years ago in the car business some GM auto transmissions with less than 100% gripping power on the clutch plates etc, we would use Ford ATF.  The Ford ATF had a bit more grip in the fluid and would stop some of the heat build up due to slightly worn GM clutch plates.

I've been out of the loop long enough to not recognize the ATF by type names, Dexron or Mercon and Torco MTL.  My first guess is that Dexron is GM, but the others I could only make a wilder guess at.

Thanks for sharing...

Well Amsoil is the big seller in this area so I use Amsoil super shift.. IE syn type F fluid. This has shown to enable the clutch to hold more power with less clamp load and it works. The fluid has never been a  solution to the lack of lubrication issue.  Now if you choose to use a fluid other than the spec"ed fluid that is your choice. Stock fluid works fine, a Large% of the builds we do are builds producing some larger tq numbers in the low RPM range and that takes it toll on the clutch. SO a fluid that allow the clutch to perform better is always an upgrade. Without adding proper lubrication to the comp though it will not last ,..Use of ATF will degrade that part even faster ..when those parts are not being lubed correctly. ATF is not a great lube for this type of use, However if you flood the part with constant lube it works.. Make sense  :2vrolijk_21:
