High beams and fogs.
« on: April 23, 2014, 09:18:32 PM »

Cvo 2014 limited.   I read somewhere on here  that a person had the dealer turn on or was it wired the fogs to stay on with high beams??  50 bucks or so.   I am buying and would like this done at dealers expense.

I have a 2014 Softail Deluxe.  At my request, the dealer hooked up my bike to the computer and programed the passing lights to stay on when I use the bright light.  N/C to me

On your new bike it's a programmable option.  Prior to 2014 it was a wiring change.  Yours needs to go to the shop and be reprogrammed via Digital Technician.

Make it part of the negotiation.  All it takes is for them to hook up their Digital Technician equipment to the bike and go into the lighting section of the BCM to turn the feature ON.  It wouldn't take but a few minutes, but most shops charge at least a half hour at their inflated labor rate to just hook up the equipment.

Thanks guys.     In dealing with them, they were looking for a connector.   I emailed the gm who I am dealing with on this.     I understand the fed rules.  But geez.  With  high beams on, I want all the light I can get to see what's out there.

The new, upgraded, Mandated Digital Technician is >$4k. A half hour is cheap...

Spread that $4k out over all the vehicles they service over the next umpteen years and it's peanuts compared to the systems and special service tools the car folks have to buy.  Keep trying to make me feel sorry for Harley dealers, but don't be surprised when it doesn't work. ;)

You make it sound as if "having" to buy tools that allow you to work on your dealer network branded vehicles and charge for that effort is somehow extraordinarily onerous.  They have to supply a shop, and lifts, and compressors also.  In other words the dealers have to operate a business and supply the necessities attendant thereto.  For WillieG's sake they don't even supply things like shop towels and many other of the very basics anymore as nearly all shops add an extra fee above the job cost just for those things.

A few specialty tools are a small thing.  Each tech is very likely going to have to have spent quite a bit more than $4k you're opining about here just for the hand tools in his box to even have a chance to walk in the door and work there.

+1

if you want to run a business, then you have to have the tools necessary to run that business.  it isn't like every tech has to run out and buy a dt for themselves.

thats one of those 'dealer supplied' items, like counters, bathrooms, etc.  no dt, they are not going to be able to do a lot of the work that is expected of them.

Jerry, TwoLane,
'Having worked as a Dealer Tech (auto) and owning/operating my own Repair Shop (boat), I have direct experience with the overhead $ involved.

'Not crying for the Dealer (or anybody else, for that matter) 'don't care, except for the fact that I have a great relationship with a great Dealer, and don't want to see them go under...

'Guess that my main point is that The Maximus has the same capabilities as the mandated DT at a fraction of the cost. Even the Dealers are not immune to the MoCo BS.

To The OP; sorry about getting off subject, 'just get the Dealer to switch the lights over with the DT. (or once Maximus is operational, then your Indy can do it)

Not disagreeing with the point of contributory overhead expenses always being a concern.  Have been self-employed in some form all my life including automotive machine when I was young equipment for a decent volume production machine shop will quickly outstrip a general shop).  And whether or not one "feels for" the impositions placed on any given shop by their factory master will depend a lot on the relationship one has for that shop.  In the grand or broad scheme there just aren't that many HD dealerships I find it easy to have sympathy with.

Granted, Mother Harley herself isn't given any greater fealty than what I feel toward the dealerships.  But it's the locals we're discussing now.
