Highway 24 Colorado
« on: May 07, 2014, 11:23:08 AM »

Hwy 24 north from Hwy 50 (north from Salida, CO) continuing north towards Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Curious about weather conditions in late July...

Is this a "daily afternoon thunderstorm" route as many can be in the Rocky Mountains?

If you are talking about passing through Tennessee pass into the minturn area you should be fine.  We do get afternoon showers but nothing toooooo drastic  :D.  Actually, I had a jeep go through a mud puddle on that pass going the opposite direction and several years later when I traded that bike in, it still had mud on the engine.

There was a big rock slide there this winter but it was cleaned up.

I would not let anything stop you from that route during the time frame you speak of.

Do you know if Hwy 34 from Loveland thru Estes Park to Hwy 40 is passable since last years flooding and washouts?

I will try and answer your question in 4 weeks. We are traveling those same roads in reverse.

I will try and answer your question in 4 weeks. We are traveling those same roads in reverse.

In late July we're heading to Steamboat Springs (visiting a relative), then to Moab where we're going to rent a 4 wheeler for a couple of days, then to Cortez and the Pueblo ruins, then to Durango and Hwy 550 to north of Montrose to Hwy 92 along the north ridge of the Black Canyon to Gunnison, then Hwy 50 over Monarch Pass to Hwy 24 back to Steamboat Springs.  Then on to Deadwood for some or all of the Sturgis Rally...  Probably 2 or 3 weeks or so...   :2vrolijk_21:

34 is open.  There will be construction on the road during the summer, but it's been open since late last year.  It's a nice ride!  SJ Ron :)

We've ridden Hwy 34 3 or 4 times in the last few years.  Always a great ride.  I'd read that 34 had been temporarily reconstructed, but didn't know how "motorcycle ready" it was.  Glad to learn it's good to go!  thanks...   :2vrolijk_21:

128 in Moab east of 191 along the river is a great ride, did it last year. Part of our ride this year is Loveland through Rocky Mountian N.P., south down 24 to 50 and into Black Canyon of Gunnison N.P., staying in Montrose. Next day is up to 70 over to 128 south into Moab. Donna got very ill last year while in Moab and we didn't get much of Archs N.P. in, so we're going back since we're in the area. Here is a shot I got on 279 west of 191 along the river while Donna rested at the room.

Pretty similar route as we plan this year.

Two years ago, we took your route to Moab, then Bryce Canyon, then Zion, then north to Flaming Gorge, then to Yellowstone, then Cody, then Beartooth Pass and Chief Joseph Highway, and then on to Deadwood and the rally for a few days.  My absolute favorite part of the country...   :2vrolijk_21:

Small world, all part of the ride before we get to Loveland!
