Suspension Work
« on: July 30, 2014, 08:18:33 AM »

Anyone know anybody over here in Germany that can do some front end work for me?

I need to get these crappy monotubes out before I have an accident!

Are you absolutely sure you want to have someone do the work or is it possible that you can do the work yourself?  If I lived out there I would try to learn to service my bike, it may be possible to install the Traxxion AK-20's on your front end or a similar quality suspension if you talk to them about doing the work yourself.  I do know that Traxxion makes their dealers attend a workshop prior to becoming a dealer.  Maybe you can find an independent shop that specializes with suspension work.  You can Google Harley Suspension and you will come up with lots of options, it all depends on how much you want to spend and if you want their higher end product or just a slightly better product.  You will have to do some searching.  Have you tried to reach Kraut?  I believe he is in Germany and is very knowledgeable.  He may be able to point you in the right direction.

Good Luck

Well I am going to attempt this on my own, I think?

I am convinced that the HD put to much oil in when they installed my Monotubes.  So while I got them off, I will add one preload c clip.  These things ride like crap wallowing about, brake dive still present and lately this feeling at low speed like the front tire is on ice.  I have checked and rechecked all the obvious things.  I am going to completely replace the Monotubes with a new set, at least I think that is the route I am going.  I still want to research the Ohlin's to see what's involved with installing them.  If it is the same I will order them.

I wonder if I can take the bottom 6mm bolt out of the bottom of the forks and drain some oil and test ride until it feels right as opposed to disassembling everything.
That way I can take it all apart this winter and ride while it is still nice.

After I rode a Skunk with the monotubes, and PS shocks, I was very unimpressed, so I went with the H-D Premium and 'am very happy all the way around...

Ohlins goes in the same as the monos, so does the H-D.

I might be mistaken, but I think the monotubes are sealed and removing the oil won't do anything.

What are you running for rear shocks? You might have to adjust them to play well with the front?

'Went with the H-D Premium shocks (standard on your Skunk) then the Premium fork cartridges, after about 1k mi or so the forks settled in, I adjusted the shocks 2x and found the ride and handling I was looking for...

The front and rear have to play well together on any good suspension system.

Well I have tried three different rear shocks with no avail.

I was able to find the directions for the new Ohlin front suspension.  It looks to be pretty close to the same except I saw something in there where the refer to a top out spring, I think that must be from the OEM setup, if so I no longer have that piece, I think I sold it awhile back.
