Brake in for motor
« on: June 09, 2014, 12:40:22 PM »

Just had half of a 110 motor rebuilt due to a loose nut that found it's way in the front cylinder. So now do you think I should treat it as a new brake in or not ????????

If they replaced the jugs and pistons/rings...yes.  Do several 3rd gear runs up to about 60mph (AFTER it's warmed up), then let the engine brake you back down to 2K RPM.  Do that for about 50 miles whenever possible and the rings will be seated as well as they will ever be.

I do not subscribe to the HD suggested break in shown in the owner's manual, other than I try not to run at a constant speed for the first 500 miles, if possible.  After that, I ride it like I normally would...I don't putt putt around though...

Totally agree,  Nice roll ons on the free way slowly raising the rpm of each roll on. Do not pussy foot.

Vary the rpm for a few hundred miles, then get on the interstate and ride it like you stole it!!!

Agree with stated break-in process above.  This is my second time in 20k miles, first motor went South, HD replaced in with NO issue.  Still don't know root cause, but I am going thru the break-in process now...

Harley's break in routine is written to avoid warrenty claims, not seat the rings properly. As said above get it warm, ride it like you stole it!! Was reading one article on motor break in that said with todays materials, break in occurs within the first 50 miles.

This "don't follow the HD break-in" is total BS.  I have 106,000 on my CVO and it runs like it was new and uses minimal oil between changes.  ALL motorcycle and auto manufacturers have advised the gentler break-in process for years.  Read Donny Petersons latest columns in American Iron mag....he recommends the same....key is to avoid build up of heat in the motor, and 'ride like you stole it' will do just that.  Don't do it.

My 2009 CVO Springer is getting a motor upgrade right now. New rings to be installed following the head work. Seems to be varying opinions on the break in! My mechanic told me I would break it in for 500 miles and then take it back to him for the final tune. I want it right when its all done! Suggestions?

With a nicely honed cylinder, and modern ring technology, break-in is very quick.
Wailing on it driving excess heat into the ring pack is not a recommended procedure.
Semi-aggressive roll-on throttle in the lower gears w/o pulling it all the way to the stops is fine.

:2vrolijk_21:
Engine braking is just as important as filling the cylinder to seat the rings. Don't follow break in instructions..
Last build I did had 4 heat cycles, several roll ons to 5500 rpm and engine break to 2000. Then I rode it normally ( like I stole it)
