Drilling muffler...
« on: June 19, 2014, 06:36:08 PM »

I have an 08 SERK....was changing tires out today (had the stock mufflers off) and was looking into the up stream end of the muffler with a flashlight. I can see a honey comb effect in there. Anyone tried drilling (maybe a series of larger holes) for more relief? I know on earlier RK the catalytic converter was in the head pipe...and were being drilled out?

Another Q. would be...how deep is the honey comb?
Is that honey comb the converter?

Thanks!!

My CAT and baffle was attached, riveted into the muffler shell.  I drilled out the rivets and pull all that crap out.  Then I ordered a baffle from fulsac, cut the end off the original baffle, welded the new baffle and inserted into the muffler, dyno tuned, and I'm happy with all this.

Yes, the catalytic converter was in the engine end of the muffler--IIRC, 2 to 3 inches deep. You can core-drill it out or replace the baffles.  Either way, it will be cooler there, and depending on the baffles you choose, probably louder.  Not sure on the SERK (air cleaner?), but might make the engine run too lean, which means need tuner and tune.

Foot Loose thanks for the reply. What you did is exactly my thought... how do you like the note?

So...the converter and baffles are all one of the same? My thought was, is....to drill say 7 to 8 half inch holes around the outside perimiter and maybe a 3/4 inch hole in the center....acquire a tuner then tune. Thanks!!

Mud - I put the 1 3/4 inch core baffle in.  I didn't want to wear ear plugs, but I think I would go with the 2" core.  Those who want to drill things out better be careful, lose metal particles could get sucked into the cylinders with a back fire.   :o
I came up with 89 HP and 105# torque with screaming eagle chip and dyno tune

Honey comb Converter is 3 in in length, a 1.6 core drill will make a perfect hole through the converter approx. the size of the inlet, does add a little more rumble to the mix.
