I have had my ConV on several X-country rides and leave my bags on most of the time.  They have held up remarkably well with minimum maintenance and cleaning.  I prefer to use a leather prep I got from Griots Garage but any good leather preserver should do, even used Armor All in a pinch when I am out on a long ride.
