Bolting in a new cam in a 2014 FLHTK with 800 miles, Good practice to install new lifters? or will the OE be fine with new miles?
Hard to say. I have a somewhat hi-performance 110 with headwork, 58mm TB, hi-lift cam (Woods 408-6), roller rockers, SE adj pushrods making 129/129 power. I ride it pretty hard. I have 41000 miles and about 39000 are with this build. I decided to upgrade the lifters to the Woods Hi-Perf directional lifter given the mileage and higher engine performance.
When the stock OE lifters from 2010 were taken out this Spring, I was somewhat amazed. The lifters looked like they were just removed from the factory packaging. Not a single wear mark even when looking with magnification. The Dealer tech was also somewhat surprised but he said it wasn't the first time he saw stock Harley lifters removed with my mileage and no wear marks.
All that being said there can be internal wear to the roller that's not visible. Since it was apart I went with the new lifters from Woods.
My engine was pretty noisey with the hi-lift cam (.650), hi perf Woods valve springs and larger valves, so I also had some minimal hope that the noise might be reduced with the Woods lifters.
Nope, the sound is just as loud but slightly different. Hard to explain the difference but the clatter is just as loud as it was with the stock lifters. I run Syn 3 in the engine and given the 40000 miles of performance I'm not inclined to change from Syn3 at this point.
