CB quits working after an hour
« on: June 30, 2014, 08:45:07 PM »

Trying to analyze this one with no luck. Trip to the Dragon this past weekend and after an hour or so I lost the ability to transmit on the CB. I can hit the PTT button and see on the display where the mic should be open to talk but it isn't transmitting. At one of the stops I tried another cord from the console to my helmet. Worked for even less time and then I started losing the audio from the radio also. Next stop, switched back to the original cord and all was fine for an hour. Stopped to eat, came out and all was good for about another hour. This is the 3rd different set of headsets this bike has done this with and it's getting annoying. It's done it with the HD factory set, the HD 1/2 helmet set and now with my Nolan setup so I really don't think it's in the cords or helmets. Just trying to find a place to start so when I take it to the dealer for repair under ESP I don't get hammered with diagnosis time. I'm starting to think it's either the radio itself or the connector in the console although we've had issues with the passenger connector as well.

Thoughts on what the problem might be are welcome. Opinions of what I should spend my money on instead unless they fully integrate with with stock radio are not.
Thanks.

I'm hoping he sees this and responds. Or the guy from Iron Cross.
I had a problem last year on the way to MV where it just beeped every 10 seconds. They guys over at Asheville got it fixed with a recalibration that day we rode over. I'd just like to be able to use the features that came with the bike.

And as far as those 15's,,, no new SERGU so I'm out of that hunt. ;)

Mike sounds like the CB module may be bad. Does receive work OK all the time?
If so probably the transmit final output transistor sounds like is getting overheated causing the problem ?????  Your dealer should be able to loan you a module for a day to troubleshoot to see if that will fix your problem especially if you have extended warranty.

Sounds like your CB is bad. Have the Harley Tech check your SWR's if they know what that is. If not get it checked before using a new CB unit. The biggest killer of a CB is bad SWR's. Standing Wave Ratio.

A good way to test to make sure it is not the radio intercom system is to turn the CB off and use the intercom. Just ride and use the intercom every 10 min or so even if no one is there to hear you. You should be able to hear yourself every time. If you do not have any issues with the radio or intercom for a few hours then turn the CB ON. If your issue appears then suspect the CB module.

I don't think it is your helmets or drop cords, but check out the radio and intercom for a few hours with the CB off just to be sure the radio is OK. just ride and use the intercom every 10 min or so even if no one is there to hear you. You should be able to hear yourself every time.

update so far. Spent over 3 hours cleaning the bike today. Had it plugged into the battery tender with the radio on and the headsets plugged in. Turned on the intercom and would test them about every 20 minutes or so. They never failed. I think on Fri we'll take a nice long ride and use the headsets on intercom and see how they hold up. I'll also try the CB again and see if it craps out so I have something to go to the dealer with.

Another update. Took a ride yesterday and tried to use the intercom. Would work and then quit. Wiggled the plug in the console and it worked. Looks to be the culprit. I'll check it myself for a bad solder joint before leaving it with the dealer for a day.

You can buy an inexpensive SWR meter at RadioShack, good enough for the CB antenna calibration.

My money is on the headset connector, especially if you used it a lot.

Haven't used it a lot by any means but I sure do get caught in a lot of downpours. I'm starting to suspect that may be reason

Maybe a good start would be to spray some electric specific cleaner into the connector. (Contact cleaner) I would at least try that before I start disassembling stuff.

Been that done that already. Console isn't too hard to take off. I might have caused the issue when I had my tank off last winter

You might want to try another headset drop cord, they do go bad. Also apply a little dielectric grease in the connector. It does not take much, use a used tooth brush to work it into the female pins and then whip off any excess from the face of the connector.
