FLH SERIES HEAT DEFLECTORS
« on: June 15, 2014, 06:43:41 PM »

Do Kuryakyn Heat deflectors work? are they worth the investment?
I
I own a FLHXSE2 BLK&Orange looking to purchase heat deflector for the summer is worth the purchase? Will I feel a noticible difference or is it unrealistic to think that its possible to significantly deflect heat when you sit on top of the heat source? Note I have revmoved CAT as I have V&H Xpipe and HighOutputs if that adds to my hot crotch?
If yes, they are worth the purchase which ones look better smoke or black with chrome trim?
Is installation simple?

thanks

Did you have the bike dynotuned after the exhaust upgrade?  If not, then you should do this first.

Small price and I installed in my 2008 SERK.  I found they made a nice difference and I think the smoke version looks nice

Heat shields under seat? Your opinions please
« Reply #3 on: June 16, 2014, 02:53:56 PM »

I have an 04 FLHTCUI trike, yesterday while out for a nice long ride with Randy (DaBigNuttedMan) my legs were extremely hot, there always hot, but yesterday was different, they were so hot at times I thought my Jeans were on fire. Yes they were black Jeans, yes it was hot outside between 80 and 90.  On the way home I was so uncomfortable I almost pulled over but I just wanted to get home so I could get off this trike.  When we got home the first thing I did was get my pants off and when I looked at my legs I couldn't believe it, there was a line inside my lower thigh that was beet red, and hurting, I hopped right in the shower and when I felt it it had 2 nice sized blisters, and today there bigger, one is the size of a dime and the other is the size of a nickel, I put some burn crème on them and eventually the pain subsided, today the red is a lot less but the blisters seem larger.  What I was looking at is a set of heat deflectors that go next to your seat where the pipes are, does anyone think these will work?  The problem is that I am short, have a 25" inseam so my legs hang straight down to reach the floor boards.  Would wearing another layer under my jeans help like a pair of bike shorts or do they make anything like some kind of undergarment that would help?  When it's 90 out how many layers can you wear without sweating your ass off while walking around?  Just wondering if anyone else has any reviews on the deflectors or any ideas that will help.  I'm just worried that by the time I get to Maggie Valley I'll have roasted legs and spend the week soaking in a cold bathtub instead of riding.

if you have a tuner, like Power Comander or TTS, you could put a canned map on it until you get it tuned properly.  Some of your heat may be due to the lean condition on your bike, that now is even worse worse with changing out the pipes.  the lean setting will cause extra heat and not good for the life of your engine either

If you don't have one yet, consider buying one from Fulsac or fuelmoto, I believe both have large library of canned maps that they can load into the tuner before shipping to you.

If you can wear chaps it will keep the fire off you. I have melt marks on both my chaps as well as my leather pants and I have burnt the back of my leg behind knee area as well that has made burn marks on jeans in that area. I don't have the shields so can't comment on those.

My 11.5 CUSE6 came with the HD version of the heat deflectors and they do help deflect a lot of the  heat away from the riders thighs.

Well let me tell you, these helped a LOT, still hot but no where as much, I actually could enjoy the ride yesterday....Don't hesitate to add these to your ride.   :pepper:

Get a tuner, even a generic map for a trike with similar options should help a bunch.  You shouldn't have blisters or even a red leg.  I am sure if you give Steve George a call at full sac he can set you up with the tts system and get you a close map for it till your able to get a tune done on a dyno.

It might be a little harder finding a tuner that can do trikes but I have seen it done on a automotive dyno.   Wish I could remember who it was.   He had a portable unit that he pulled with his truck.   Don't know if he was any good but he sure had a nice set up.
