HELP with rattle in primary
« on: August 07, 2014, 09:26:20 AM »

Well I have developed a rattle coming from the primary. Noticeable at idle when cold and if you rev it up it gets worse. Once warm not so bad. Does not seem noticeable at highway speeds except on higher RPM. As well slightly noticeable on decal.

35,000 km on an 09 classic with a Hayden chain tensioner.

I am going to open it tonight.

Why does this chit happen just before you leave on a big trip and your dealer 120 miles away....... :( >:(

I'm thinking comp or ........... @#$!%@#$!

maybe a VICTORY is a fix......

Check your spring compression measurement first when you open the primary. The M6 should have a measurement of 5/8" from the bottom of the nylon shoe to where the springs are sitting. If that gap is too wide, you need to add a shim under the springs to tighten it up. On your year bike you can have up to a total of 5 shim to pick up the chain slack. Once you use 5 and the M6 can no longer pick up the slack, it's time for a new primary chain, back off the M6 and start all, over. That measurement is the most important part of your M6 install. Call us at 951-371-0030 if you have further questions or need shims. (California time zone).
Enjoy the ride.

If you have the Hayden, check to see if one of the springs has broken.  If so, there's not enough tension to keep the primary chain tight, and it will rattle on the primary housing, esp during decel.  That's what happened to mine.  Hayden took care of it.

My above reference to this applies to M6 Chain Tensioners from 1965-2006. In looking at your photo I realized this is a BT07. Difference being the unit will only come with 2 shims and the spring compression (again the most important part of the installation) should be set to 3/8".  Sorry for the hick-up but hopes this sets it straight.

Well took the cover off and all is good, BUT dammit like just not 1000 miles ago put a new ring gear on and guess what fell out when the cover came off. Another tooth. That's the second time. I give up. wtf

I have never been so discouraged.

Using a 102 tooth starter ring gear? Go to 84 or 66 with correct
Starter gear. Bigger gears don't easily break

Kathy,

you were great to work with when I had the broken spring.  Hope I didn't come across as bashing Hayden.  I brought the broken spring to the Hayden shop, and you handed me new springs and the upgraded pad, and additional spacers, no questions asked.  It's nice living here where so many aftermarket products are made and distributed.

Great product and excellent service!

Dan

Bub, I hope you resolve this to your satisfaction.  Sorry about the recurring issue.
