Oil Pressure Question?
« on: August 15, 2014, 10:50:08 AM »

My one bike only has 2100 miles on the oil, (my street glide) but it's been in there a little more than 10 months.  I noticed that the oil pressure dropped rather dramatically the other day.  No idiot light though. Well, the first thing I did was replace the sender unit.  That fixed a similar situation in my other bike.  Anyway, no change.  Then I read somewhere that if the oil filter has been on the bike a long time that changing it may correct this.  So I changed the oil and filter and low and behold, the oil pressure is right back up to where it usually is.  When hot, the bike normally runs around 32psi running and 12psi at idle.  Before the oil change, the bike was running 22-24psi running and about 8psi at idle (give or take).  Using the gauge in the dash.  I always use Syn-3 and the Harley oil filter that's called for.  Is this normal?  I've never experienced this before, but I usually get more miles on my bikes.  Been a down year so far.  Oh, the bike is a bone stock 08 FLHX 96 inch with 37000.  Does not use any oil.

My 08 Screaming Eagle w/110 which appears to be same as yours is doing same thing you described with oil pressure. My bike stalled while riding two days ago with no warning and won't restart. Have it in shop now, no trouble codes appeared.

Check it with a manual gauge first to be sure the sender is not suspect.
There are a few things that can cause this but rule the sender out 1st

Chief Bart - Sorry to hear this.  Please post when you find out anything.  How many miles on the bike?  Like I mentioned in my OP, I had a very similar situation occur on my CVO about 3 years ago.  Oil pressure reading low after getting up to operating temp.  I changed the sender and haven't had an issue since.  I do ride the CVO more and as a result it gets more frequent oil changes.  As a side note, today I cut open the oil filter and although the element was black and kind of sludgy, I did not find any debris in it to speak of.  I was especially looking for cam tension-er material.  Maybe it was just diluted oil in my case.  Anyway, good luck on your end.

Turns out a fuel line in tank separated. Bike has 49k miles. I'm having fluids changed while she's in.  I'll monitor the oil pressure after this change and pursue other fixes if it continues.

As suggested, verify real pressure with known good gauge. If still low, its likely the pressure relief valve in the camplate stuck open. Either a tiny piece of dirt or a little too tight in the fitup. fwiw  twinotter
