Here is what an Harley Dealer in Bangalore, India looks like from outside and on the showroom floor. Got these from a friend of mine who is there on business travel for a few weeks.

Actually, it really wasn't all that long ago that the typical Harley dealership looked very similar.  Back in the 80's there were still plenty of the old time shops, including more than a few with dirt floors, that didn't look this good.

That looks exactly like a dealership in Guadalajara Mexico.

Before the boutiques that are called dealerships now, there were actual shops.  If you wanted to find the local dealership (before the devilnet), just find the town's strip joints and pawn shops and waller, you found the dealer.

The old dealership here in K'ville (K'ville HD on Clinton Hwy) is still in operation.....as a Yamaha/Honda dealer.  Still owned by the same family, however, that owns the HD shops in Knoxville....soon to build a new facility between the old shop and new one that will sell Indian/Victory/Triumph

There are things I miss and don't miss about the old shops.  A lot of the then-new shops that sprang up just before and during the AMF days were terrible.  Whether they intended to be or not not being relevant; they just were.  Harley's only due diligence then was did someone have enough cash to pay a dealer fee.

The other side of the coin were dealerships and shops that weren't breeding grounds for kids with new wrenches and a greater affinity for Digital Technician than said wrenches.  These were shops and stores you could ride in dirty and not be worried about touching the oh-so-pretty decor that was on the other side of the store.  And when you showed up dirty you still got a donut and no one cared.

Many of the new shops that sprang up then did try hard.  Some actually got better.  Others learned there was more money to be made from the boutique side of the Harley world than from the bike side.  To a casual rider looking for something to do on a sunny Saturday afternoon when the temps are between 75 and 88 or who look to ride (across town) to dinner or the bar that is no doubt just fine.  To the non-rider it's ideal; they can shop for a tank top and a pair of shorts you'd never ride in and not feel at all out of place.  To the small cohort that is the rest of us it's a pretty sorry legacy.
