High idle upon startup until bike is stopped for 5-10 seconds.
« on: October 08, 2014, 03:44:07 PM »

I have started parking my bike in a spot at work where I can start it and ride off without letting it idle for long and have noticed that it stays near 2000 rpm until I stop the bike for a full 5 to 10 seconds. There are several stop signs that I do a quick stop and go and it keeps idling fast for several minutes until I bring it to a complete stop and sit until the idle comes down. I never noticed this before because where I used to park I had to walk the bike backwards about 15 feet and then pull out, and leaving the house I have to stop to cross a bridge and the idle was always normal. Any ideas if this is normal?

Noticed you are from Ohio... could it have something to do w/ambient temps and ECM is making bike idle higher/longer to reach operating temp. :nixweiss:

Not sure as it has been in the high 40's in the morning but high 60's by the time I leave work. It doesn't seem to be temp related.

My 2006 has always done that. Only when it's a cold start. It's got a high idle more in the 1,400 rpm range that after about 10 seconds goes down to normal. However, if I do take-off right away, it will stay at high idle for a while until I stop and let it idle down. If I don't come to a full stop and let it idle down, it will eventually work itself out, but it takes a little while, maybe 5 to 10 minutes or so. I think it's normal.

Try cycling the ignition 4 times without starting.  With the TBW, if you blip the throttle while starting or stopping, the computer can glitch on idle speed.  Cycling the ignition will clear this.

I'll have to pay closer attention on my next cold start, but 2k rpms sounds kinda high. I think mine idles about 1500 for a bit then slowly comes down. I think the diff idle speeds are all dependent on what readings the various sensors are picking up and telling the ecm. My FP3 tuner lets me see or screw with the idle tables if I want, but I left them alone. I never touch my throttle when starting and I usually let it warm up off a cold start at least a min or two before taking off. The few times (wee morning hours) I start it right up and slowly take off babying it, mine also seems to hang a little like you mentioned so I'd say sounds pretty normal to me.

If you let it idle for a second before you take off. Does it help?  I would let it idle and let starting steps, crank to run, warm up, cranking fuel all get out of the way.  Besides, letting it idle for a minute isn't going to hurt a thing.

I had the same issue, until I let it idle for about 10-15 seconds before I ride off.

My 2006 just started idling high. Lubed the cables now all is good. Don't think they sell FBW lube yet  :huepfenlol2:
