Pop , back fire hard to start

I just pack for a weekend road trip. Started the bike for warm up, it idled for 30 seconds started to run rough and died. It finally started again and now a lot of top end noise and back fires when trying to start. Possible broke valve spring??

Check your fuel psi? I had a very similar  problem. Ended up being a small hole in the fuel line inside the tank

I also had the same problem as camojeeper did,  last year on my 04 ....  same symptoms as you .

I started by checking the fuel pressure with this fuel tool pressure tester.

very handy tool to have around.

did find a hole in the fuel pump pressure side line ......   connect the tool,  turn the key on to build pressure on the gage,  then turn the key off to see if it holds pressure .. should hold pressure for a long time ..  if it leaks down,  look in your parts manual for the check valve flex tubing.

also check the spark plugs and read them ...  do a compression test ...

battery and charging voltage ..

lots of other things it could be .. test and eliminate ...

That is what my Jalapeno did, was a dropped valve guide.

Mine ended up being a spun inner cam bearing...bought a new long block

sorry to hear it turned out to be so drastic a failure ....   so,  just for future reference,   were there any other symptoms?    oil pressure?    metal flaks in the oil?

No signs of failure before it came apart, just had it serviced 361 miles prior. The engine was idling in my garage when it spun.

was it the original inner bearing?  Many of us have upgraded the stock inner cam bearing has they have been known to fail.
