Exhaust Clearance Problem?
« on: December 19, 2006, 07:34:00 PM »

I'm a newbie to posting on this site but I'm hopeful someone reading this may be able to offer some insight. I'm just a few weeks away from taking deivery on a Red 07 SERK and needles to say, I'm pretty excited!! I've been planning to add a Ness Big Sucker, a SERT and a set of true duals (Bassani or Reinharts) but heard today of a clearance problem with both of these brands of pipes as they pass by the rear brake arm on the 07 SERKs. Has anybody out there installed a set of Bassani or Reinhart true duals on their 07 SERT? And if you have, did you encounter a problem with the heat sheild not fitting behind the brake arm?
Thanks in advance for your input! :-/

If you get the new version RH's you won't have a problem.

The Basanni's...you WILL have a problem.  They do not offer a good solution to the problem, other than "dimpling" or cutting the heat shield.  It kept me from considering their product, even though it is an excellent exhaust system.

TCnBham & Kojak,
Thanks for your input. Dimpling and cutting doesn't sound like something I want to do. RH's are sounding better all the time. Thanks again!

Gordie...kind of answered you in a hurry yesterday...I actually spoke with the Eastern Distributor for Basanni's when decididing on pipes, and after learning of someone's problem with the Brake Pedal (I'm pretty sure it was RobMay)...their explanation was that the headers are made for the masses, and not the SE's, so the options to solve the problem were: put a soft cloth around a screwdriver and "dimple" the heat shield where the pedal makes contact; change the brake pedal to a "regular" one; or, modify the brake pedal by grinding a bit off (If I'm not mistaken, that was Robs solution and it worked out well for him).  Also, there is some variance in the bends in the manufacturing process, so some of the headers do not make contact at all...just the luck of the draw.

The RH's fit perfectly...the ONLY thing with the RH's is that the rear header does not hug the left frame as tightly as the stock pipe...it sticks out about 1/2 to 3/4 inches more. Not a big deal. The problem the RH's used to have with the rear cylinder header pipe support weld breaking has been solved...the tab that supports the header is no longer welded to the pipe...they use a clamp/tongue configuration now.

Gordie,

Did you make a decision on the pipes yet?  Inquiring minds want to know, especially those of us with bikes on the way who must make some decisions on pipes ;)

Hey Colbalt,
I did make a decision. I went to my dealer yesterday after getting a call from them saying they had just put a set of RH's on an 07 SERK. They did have to cut a very small piece of the heat shield off in order to get the clearance for the billet brake arm. It was impossible to see what they'd done without crawling under the bike. It was virtually un- noticable. My concern with this method was what might happen over time with rust. They treated the small affected area with some type of clear coat material and are 99% sure it will never be a proble. The RH's sound great on the 110. It's a deep, throaty rumble that personifys the Harley sound. I don't expect to see my bike for another three weeks or so but will be happy tp post a pic when I've had the work done if it would help you in your decision process.

Thanks Gordie,

The problem with the install for the RH's is under the Intake/Exhaust category.

I'll be very interested to hear your interpretation of how they look and what type of mods they had to make to get them to fit properly.
