Bad News from Garmin UPDATED INFO
« on: October 19, 2015, 04:25:07 PM »

I've been having some issues with my RT Zumo 660 and the voice prompts.  Sometimes the volume drops and I can barely hear the prompts then after a few minutes it performs normally.  So I called Garmin tech support and learned that Garmin has discontinued any repair / replacement of the 660 / 665, has no inventory available and will have no more inventory.  So as the units malfunction we are sol.  Thanks a lot Garmin.   :'(

The 450/550's have been that way for awhile.. there is a guy highly recommended on the Zumo Forum - Palm Dr. I haven't used him but many positive posts about his ability to repair (your unit vs getting a refurbished from Garmin), inexpensive cost, and quick turn around.

Thanks Gary.  I knew about the 450/550 but I didn't think Garmin would obsolete the 660/665 quite so soon.  There is nothing available except the RT version of those that will pass voice prompts through the NIM.  Now that I've gotten used to it I like having it.  But at least the gps functions normally except for the occasional voice prompt glitches.   :2vrolijk_21:

Kind of crappy on Garmin's part, especially considering the fact that H-D still sells the Road Tech models (still in the current catalog).  Did the guy you talked to indicate what happens when someone buys a new one and has warranty problems?  If they don't plan to do repairs and don't have replacement inventory, it's going to be real tough to stand behind the warranty on the ones currently being sold from Harley inventory.

I repaired my 550 by replacing membrane and since they were cheap bought 2 ($20.00 for both)

by buying the second I insured myself for not needing it again.

Waze maybe making Garmin obsolete anyway.  Waze maybe the best GPS out there.

Palm DR is the bomb. Using WAZE is cool, but it uses to much data for me, sometimes we use it for 15-16 hrs at a time. Just cannot justify data for the extended use. Garmin or similar will never be replaced by data type unit, for me, unless unlimited data returns as an option.

Based on your observation I called Garmin again to learn that my particular RT Zumo 660 did not come from Garmin with the lifetime map option.  Those units that came with lifetime maps updates are designated RT Zumo 660LM.  It is the non LM version that is no longer repairable nor exchangeable according to the tech I spoke with.  The LM versions are however as they were produced later and may have updated features, etc., etc.  This is total BS as far as I can tell as they are the same unit.  Garmin used to charge for each and every map update, then they made available lifetime map updates for a one-time fee, then they just made lifetime map updates available for no additional charge but as far as I know they didn't make any actual changes to the unit.

So I asked for a supervisor and after pleading my case she did not actually acknowledge that the non LM and the LM units are identical but I guess I made my point as she agreed to replace my unit for a fee of $160 plus shipping since it is out of warranty.  Of course I had previously paid for the lifetime map updates so I won't be getting a 'betterment.'  I will be getting a RT Zumo 660LM.

i'm not exactly sure of how this all works.  I bought a used roadtech zumo 660.  now, I don't know if the guy who sold it to me didn't know exactly what he had, but he said that I would have to pay for map updates, but that he had updated it recently so it had the newest map (at the time).  seems I've been able to update the maps at least twice sense through garmin express.  so, how do I know if I have a 660 or a 660lm?

Call Garmin and give them the serial number then they can tell you.
