The cruise liner, QE2, moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns.

5280 feet per mile.
2 gal per foot, or 10,560 gal per mile
Are you sure? you are saying 10,560 gal per mile
distance from NY to London 3463miles
http://www.geobytes.com/CityDistanceTool.htm?loadpage
       3,463 miles
   x 10,560 gal.
36,569,280 gal per crossing??

Don't know where your #s came from, I like to run the numbers...

"QE2 can sail backwards faster than most cruise ships can sail forwards and one gallon of fuel moves her 49.5 feet! She has made 795 Atlantic crossings and completed 23 full World Voyages. In that time she has been commanded by 23 Captains."

     From http://www.shipsandcruises.com/QE2_Birthday.htm

Try 106.6 Gal to the mile... 369,386.64 gal NY to London

  From...        http://www.cunard.com/onboard/default.asp?OB=QE2&Sub=sp&SubSubSection=TechInfo

"Fuel Consumption:
18.05 tons per hour, or 433 tons per day.

This is equal to six of the ship's swimming pools.

The ship's fuel oil tank capacity of 4,381.4 tonnes is sufficient for 10 days' sailing at 32.5 knots, equalling 7,800 miles.

One gallon of fuel will move the ship 49.5 feet; with the previous steam turbine engines, one gallon of fuel moved the ship 36 feet.
Engines:
Nine 9-cylinder 58/64 (580mm bore / 640mm stroke) medium speed turbo-charged diesels, running at 400 rpm and connected to individual alternators generating 10.5 megawatts each at 10,000 volts. Built by MAN B & W Diesel GmbH, Augsburg, Germany, each engine weighs 120 tons.
Motors:
Two 400-ton electric motors, one on each propeller shaft, rated at a maximum of 44 megawatts each at 144 rpm. Built by GEC, Rugby, England, the motors each weigh over 400 tons and are over 9 metres in diameter.

They are the largest marine motors ever built.

The diesel electric system produces 130,000 hp, which is the most powerful propulsion plant of any merchant ship in the world.

The 95 MV total power output is enough to light a city the size of Southampton.

QE2 is the fastest merchant ship in operation. "

   XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Near as I can figure, if they are talkin 2,000# us tons, she carries 1,251,828.5 Gals of fuel.
