    • CVO1: 2012 FLHTCUSE7 aka The Bee

Hey everyone.

Finally decided to do some upgrades to " The Bee" this season. It's been bone stock since new in 2012 and the first thing on the list was a new exhaust. Researched several and decided on the new Fullsac ceramic coated stainless steel DX and 2.25 power cores. Side note, Cammy was a pleasure to speak with and was very helpful. Even through in some nice swag which included a couple of can coozies and a tee shirt!  :bananarock:

I was going to have this installed by a local shop in my neighborhood but decided to make it a DYI project. It's been a loooong time since I wrenched on my own machines but figured I could handle it. Truth be told, it was replacing out the head pipe that had me a little nervous since I've never done that but what they heck. Figured worst case if I screwed it up, could alway throw it in a trailer and let the professionals fix my mess if need be!

Prepping the bike for the install is pretty strait forward. Seat, bags and heat shields all came off easy. I also decided to remove the tour pack. I rarely travel long distances and figure once a year if needed, it's easy enough to putt back on. Like the look better without and the weight savings, better handling in town is worth it to me. Pardon all the crap in the garage. Remodeling the basement so my garage now looks like a big storage locker!

The mufflers were a bugger to get off but eventually with a little elbow grease they came off. First minor set back was one of the torx screws on the left slip on end cap was practically welded on. The head striped trying to get it off. Ughh! Tried to use an easy out to remove it and it broke the bit off. That sucker was tight! Ended up drilling it out. No local HD dealer close so first stop was to an auto supply store to get a new clip. FYI, many cars use those clips so if you ever need one, any NAPA or auto supplier will likely have them. They didn't have the screw so tried the Lowes by me and they did.  Yeah! No biggie but added an hr to the project.

Next up was switching out the OEM cores for the new power cores. I watched a few YouTube videos on how to do this and will tell you if your're going to do this, don't mess around with a crappy grinder bit. Go spend the $25-30 for a high end carbon die bit. I have a pneumatic die grinder but even if you only have a Dremmel, get a good bit. Mine took off the spot welds in a few minutes. Take your time and be careful so you don't grind through the housing.

I was shocked when I pulled the second core out and saw this...

The insulation was all bunched up and was in tatters! Since everything had never been touched since it was originally assembled, this was how it left the factory. Gees folks. Not much in the way of quality control there!

If you're going to do this upgrade on the bike, spend the extra $$ and get the mesh sleeves for the insulation. Totally cleaned up the inside of the can and keeps everything where it should be. Didn't think to take a pic but trust me, way to go.

Removing the header went pretty smoothly. The front flange bolts are a tight fit. I used a small 1/4" ratchet and socket which did the job.

Prepped my new DX pipe and added the O2 sensors. Don't forget, the black port has to go in the back for the rear cylinder. Black is back!

Only trouble I had was installing the new exhaust gaskets. Wrecked one trying to get it to seat properly. Would recommend having a spare given their propensity to come apart if not perfectly inserted.

Once I got the new exhaust gaskets in, the head pipe went in pretty smoothly. Took a little futzing to get it in but didn't fight me too bad.

Got the slip ons reinstalled and replacing the heat shields was a snap.

All in all, while it probably took me twice the time of a bike shop, it wasn't too bad of a DYI project.

Congrats .... looks as good as it sounds! Nothing like that pride in doing it yourself and who cares how long it takes, at least you know it's right ... same reason why I have always done my own.

Thanks. I agree it's a nice feeling of accomplishment to see ones finished work and know it was by your own hands!  :2vrolijk_21:

I see you have a V &H Propipe. I had one on my last bike. No pipe is better to build torq than a 2-1 and that one has a killer sound. My friends all called it "The Bazooka"!

Almost put one on this bike but since I wasn't going to build this engine up to the hilt, decided to keep the dual pipe look. Sweet pipe!

Yep and I couldn't agree with you anymore about the Propipe ... one of the best decisions I ever made. "the Bazooka" ... lol, that's a good one. My one buddy called it a "sewer pipe" and I told him yeah, it sure does spit out some good chit! I went from Power Duals/Monster Ovals on my old RGU to this pipe on this bike to be different this time around. I also like the dual look and was on the fence about losing that left pipe/muffler, but not now. Once you fire it up and hear it, you get over that naked look on the left side real fast. It fit perfect and looks great ... also love how the muffler looks like a stepped megaphone. From that nice, deep rumble at idle to that mean bark in between shifts and jake brake like sound gearing down I just LOVE this pipe. I seriously won't buy anything but the Propipe from now on so I hope they never stop making it. I often catch myself not listening to my stereo sometimes since I got it ... if it wasn't such a hassle to put it on and take it off I would probably sleep with it every night. If you ever get bored with your new pipes and feel like a trip down memory lane purchasing a used Propipe, mine is NOT for sale ... ever! Oh well, I babbled enough ... hope you enjoy those new pipes as much as do mine.

*UPDATE*

The weather was great today and took The Bee out for a ride. Got to check out how the new Fullsac exhaust performed and let me tell you what, IT ROCKED!

The sound at idle in the garage is impressive but on the road, it's not overwhelming at all. Has a nice bark with roll on and settles in to a mellow burble while cruising. Even at highway speeds wasn't overbearing at all. Love downshifting and listening to her snap, crackle and pop!

Absolutely could tell she had more HP and Tq. Pulled better and had no unwanted detonation which it did occasionally with the OEM system.

And not having that furnace cooking my right leg was outstanding!
