Shifter shaft seal
« on: April 16, 2015, 08:50:46 PM »

Anyone else have a problem with their seal? Had mine replaced this morning under warranty. Started leaking at around 1900 mi. I am easy on the shifter not to bang on it but the seal took a dump anyway. Parts guy said they have quit a few failures. Just wondering.

My 2005 leaked after about 10,000 miles.  Haven't heard about any on here lately leaking "knock wood for all of us"..  Harley uses a cheap single lip seal that can leak.  Cometic makes a double lipped seal.  When I did my 2005 the Cometics came in a bag of five and about $10 for the bag.  Harley is so cheap they won't put in the better seal even if it costs them to replace the seal under warranty as in your case.  Nothing to be alarmed about.

This was an extremely common problem on earlier bikes, and unless people had the Cometic seals installed instead of the Harley part, repairs usually didn't last long either.  At some point Harley supposedly updated their cheap seal to a double lip design, and I haven't heard or read many complaints about shift shaft seals leaking in the past several years.  Maybe that dealership that claims they have quite a few failures is talking about failures across all model years, not just the late models.

Always remove heel shifter as soon as I get a bike for that very reason. Haven't seen it happen in years but old habits are hard to break.
