Which ipod would you use
« on: June 07, 2016, 02:26:49 AM »

I connected my 120 gig iPod to my bike. it is entirely to much music to try to cycle through. what do you think would be the right size iPod to connect to your bike so you wouldn't be overloaded with choices?

I don't think the capacity matters that much. As far as cycling through your music, I created several Playlists each with about 1.5 hours or so of music. Makes it easy to pick a Playlist and go. I also have the XM radio and between the two of them there's seldom any problem finding some tunes to satisfy.

That and I normally let my wife fiddle with all that stuff while we're riding. I even wired up a volume control for the passenger.  This way I concentrate on the road and traffic conditions. As a bonus my wife seems to get more enjoyment out of the longer rides when she can select the music she wants.

I use a 16gb and have it wired to the right front fairing glove box.  I have an '09 SERG.

I tend to do playlists as artists.  I will have as an example B.B. King as a play list and I'll fill the playlist in iTunes with my favorite B.B. King songs.  I'll have playlists for Disco Classic and Cher.... Please don't judge me.  :o

I also listen to Yngwie Malmsteen, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, ZZ Top, YES, 38 Special, Walter Trout Band, Vinnie Moore, Yardbirds, Bad Company, Bad Finger, Clapton, Black Crowes, The Band, Connie Francis, Santana, Robert Cray Band, SRV, Prince, Frank Sinatra, and the list goes on and on and on.  The guys at the Pre-NMITM can attest to my eclectic music tastes.

Its easy to just scroll through the names as playlists.  I also have classics of many years and I'll group the years like '60 - '61 - '62 - '63 as one playlist.  then 4, 5, 6, 7 etc.  It keeps me with around 40 to 50 songs in each playlist.

I will usually ride with the 16gb for a month or so and then swap out for another 16gb of new stuff.  But I always keep a few special playlists for the wife that makes her feel good.

So a 16gb or 32gb at the most would be what I would recommend.  Now that would be for the older 40 pin iPod modules.  On the newer bikes with a USB, I would recommend a similar sized thumb drive loaded with your fav's.

Music is VERY personal and this is only what has worked for me.

Good luck with your music.

I use an old 80G classic and put it on shuffle.

I have a lot of music on it, had it for years and years, i am hearing songs that i had never heard before.

These were put on from CD's over the years.

What is more of a concern is that older IPODS have moving, actual hard drives that are like the ones in your computer.

Bumpy roads or certain vibrations can cause them to skip between songs.

Newer IPODS have flash memory and they would be a better choice because without the rotating HD they are not susceptible to vibration issues.

16GB Nano for me with no vibration worries as noted above.  Holds roughly 250 hours of CD quality mp3's, enough to go for a month without hearing the same song twice. :drummer:

I also do playlists except at a higher level, i.e. genre, favorite new rock, favorite classic rock, favorite new country, etc. Typically I find myself wanting to listen to a style versus a specific artist and it is easier to scroll through the shorter list.

Some great ideas on this. Does the classic 120 G have a hard drive?

If it's a iPod "Classic" it has a hard drive. I've used my Classic for 5 years, 60,000+ miles and it has skipped maybe 3 times. If I needed an iPod I would stay away from the classic just because of the moving parts. But at the same time I wouldn't waste money replacing a Classic either. If buying one get any non classic iPod. If on a Rushmore or aftermarket radio that can read a thumb drive I'd go with that. MHO

I have a classic 120 or 160 GB iPod and love it. I did create several dozen playlists to cycle through real easily. Never have had the need to find just one song.
