Trans gear oil?
« on: May 11, 2015, 01:31:43 PM »

Sorry for such a simple question.  I don't have my manual available right now here at work and I want to pick up some Red Line Shockproof gear oil tonight and they only have one quart.

Is one quart enough for my '09 SERG trans?

Thanks.

4quarts for the motor. 1 quart should do it for the trans. and 1.39 for the primary.

The transmission capacity for a drain and refill is 28 ounces.  So yes, 1 quart is more than sufficient.

I put 1 qt in the 05 and 10 and still put 1 qt in the 14 even though the manual states 28 ounces as Jerry stated.  Don't know why the change to 28 ounces.  Like everyone has stated you have enough.

I always have put 1quart in transmission checking level with dip stip screwed in and level was on the full mark. Bike is on side stand.
Checking as manual states with dip stick resting on thread (not screwed in) and level was just touching bottom of dip stick, should I top up till level is on full mark?
Bike is FLHXSE3

Put in 1 qt Aussie and all is good.

If you overfill the trans, the worst that will happen is it will blow the excess out the vent tube and make a mess.  It doesn't help anything to overfill, like most of those "if the right amount is good, more must be better" situations.

Btw, the old five speeds called for 20-24 ounces, so a full quart would be a significant overfill.  A full quart on a Cruise Drive shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for you input.
Just wanted to confirm as a full quart is only just touching the dip stick and manual states between Add and Full mark.
So manual would be incorrect stating between ADD and Full mark with bike on side stand?

Aussie-

I currently have a 14 SE Limited.  Owners manual says to check trans fluid level with bike on jiffy stand and dipstick screwed in until the oring touches the case.
Remove dipstick and then check reading.  If you do that, the 1 qt should bring you between the add and full mark.  Bob

Are you screwing the dipstick in until the O-ring touches the case, or just inserting it until the threads touch?  Harley changed the procedure for 2013, even though they didn't change the part number for the dipstick.  Sounds like they realized they weren't getting an accurate reading and just changed the procedure instead of changing the dipstick? :nixweiss:

The attachment is from the new model tech info for the 2013 models.

Jerry,
I followed the manual with Dip stick resting on threads oil level is just on the base of dip stick.
However with dip stick screwed in till O-ring touches level is to full mark.
Thank you for the tech info.
