Shifting Comfort
« on: May 28, 2015, 09:58:14 AM »

Thought I would share this. This makes it really comfortable to up shift, you just move your foot back lift your heel and shift. This is a long shifter with the floorboard extender that moves the floor board out.

I am going to try it on the front as well.

Just my own experience... but I find the heal shifter works great with standard pegs, but not so much with floor boards.

The riding position may have something to do with it, but even if I had a longer heal shifter... I find it more troublesome to lift my heal to use it.

The standard heal shifter that came with my bike wouldn't even let me get my size 11 boots between them.  It had me 'riding the clutch' so to speak, with my boot in constant contact with one or the other until I got it home and pulled the rear shifter.

Here's another option, you may want to try...

http://www.eglidegoodies.com/id173.html

If anyone is already using one of these, I would be interested in how it works for you?

Bubtrama, been riding with the EZ-Brake extended shift arms for a few years, with the rear shift lever lowered to where I have to lift just my heel ever so slightly.  Yes, it's very comfortable once you get used to it.

However, others have rode my bike and it's hard for them to get used to.

Haven't put them on my newest bike yet but probably will soon.  I do miss that level of comfort (or is that just plain being lazy?  ;D )

The heel shifter always catches my boot after take-off, and the lever gets in the way on the floor board--so I remove it as soon as I get the bike.  That eglidegoodies shifter makes more room on the FB, but still catches my boot.  Wish it worked for me; maybe it will for you.

I have the same shift levers set up like that.  I even lowered the front lever so much that I cannot get the toe of my boot under it.  That way I have to barley lift my toe to engage the lever to downshift.  Works great for me as I am able to shift up and down with minimum foot movement.  Like many others I simply cannot ride with the stock heel shifter.  It is way too confining.

I've never been able to feel comfortable with a heel shifter, even going back to my first little bike in 1966.  Almost immediately after buying it, I took the shift lever off and hacksawed the heel portion off (didn't have separate levers in those days).  But I do observe other Harley riders and watching how some of them raise their foot off the board and basically stomp on the heel shift makes me cringe every time I see it.

Much the same here Jerry.  Have in some way removed every heel shifter on bikes I've had since the middle 70s (because I'm younger and prettier).  Have also watched and cringed when thinking about the aluminum splines on the steel peg every time see some large foot attached to a larger leg attached to a larger rider forcefully going down on a heel shifter.

I'm just the opposite, I love the heel shifter, use it all the time, the only (shifter) problems that I have encountered is the front shifter stripping out ~ go figure :nixweiss:

Of course I can't make the comparison since I've always removed the heel shift arm.  But have, like many others, had a front shift arm problem a couple times over the years.  Aluminum arm on harder steel splines.  Sometimes something is gonna give....
