Crosstalk between Harley head unit and Scala Rider G9x
« on: April 14, 2015, 07:52:53 PM »

My ride is a 2012 FLHXSE3.   :jalapeno:   I have a Scala Rider G9x Bluetooth communication system on my crash helmet, a Garmin 660 GPS (not the Harley 665) attached to the clutch lever housing and the Harley standard head unit (with radio, CD and IPod facility.) This head unit does not have Bluetooth facility.. I am using ear plugs with inbuilt speakers hard wired to the Scala unit.
When I switch on the Harley radio, CD or IPod I get a twenty second repeat of three beeps through the Scala unit to my ear plugs speakers pieces. Switch off the head unit and the beeps stop.
I think this is radio frequency interference crosswalk between the Scala unit and the head unit.  Any one experienced this or has any other ideas what is causing this? Any way to stop this interference?

Could the Garmin GPS bluetooth be trying to pair with the Scala unit?  You can rule out the the Garmin if it is unplugged before turning on the head unit.  That will give us some info to go on.

The Garmin is on and already paired with the Scala unit. The Garmin is sending directions perfectly ok to the Scala via Bluetooth. The repetitive beeps occur only when the Harley head radio/iPod/CD unit gets switched on.
This version of the head unit on my bike doesn't have Bluetooth capability.

I think this is radio frequency interference crosswalk between the Scala unit and the head unit
Let's make sure the Garmin is not involved in any way at all:
1.  Unplug the Garmin before energizing anything else.
2.  Turn the Scala unit on.
3.  Turn on the head unit.
Still have the beeping?

So I've just done what was suggested
No beeping from the Scala unit. No beeping on iPod, radio or cd position Then I turned on the Garmin out of its bike mount.  No beeping.
Then put Garmin into mount. No beeps turned off Garmin. Turned back on. No beeps. Turned off Scala and turned back on Scala. No beeping.
Scala on, Garmin on, turned off head unit and back on.  No beeps.
So what's going on here. I can't repeat the beeping.
Only thing not active is the engine running, but can't turn on at moment as it will wake up the neighbourhood. I'll try that in the morning.

3 finger reset to the rescue! (Probably not.) No idea why beeping not starting now.  Want to see what happens with regular start-up procedure and engine running.

The squelch control (sensitivity) of the mike on the G9x was set to high, so it became super sensitive. As the bike noise increases so does the volume on the HD Head Unit. So the volume gets to a level that the mike picks up as an instruction to turn on the G9x inbuilt FM radio. The beeping is the G9x turning the radio on and off.
So I now need to reduce the mike sensitivity and that should resolve the problem.
I'll take the bike out again tomorrow with reduced G9x sensitivity and see if my theory becomes an actuality.
Cheers

Well that was a failure. With the medium VOX sensdity setting on the G9x there was a longer delay until the G9x kicked in, equuivalent to going faster and therefore more volume from the HD Head unit before the medium setting on the VOX activated the G9x radio. I have one further VOX sensity setting, but I would have to scream at full voice volume to use the mike to turn things on or off which i am not prepared to do.
Think I am going to turn VOX off and just use the buttons on the G9x if I want to commucate with my pillion or fellow riders.

Good idea. I'll give them a shout in the morning. At least I know what the issue is now. Time for a Guiness  :drink:

Any resolution?
I just acquired a Scala Q3 and am hoping it works as well as the salesman says.
