Not quite 12,  check the link they list each accident, one of them is as follows, seriously  ::)

Sunday, Aug. 2, Archie Smith, 73, Kansas City, crashed his 1959 Corvette into a cable guard on I-90 at mile marker 71. While not a biker death, since the crash happened during the Sturgis rally it is counted in the data.

Of the 11 motorcyclist deaths, more than 80% involved individuals not wearing a helmet at the time of their accident.

I am not saying a helmet would have prevented all of these deaths, but it would have lowered the total.

Also, alcohol played a part in more than half of the deaths.

It's a shame that even 1 person died riding their bike to/from/during the rally.

there was a biker killed here in north Dakota the other day ( hit the rear of a semi slowing to make a right turn) and the news reports him as being from Connecticut. i'm assuming he was heading home from the rally.  would he be included in the rally stats?

No that was outside of the rally area.

Just a little reminder that over ONE MILLION people attended the rally. Less than a quarter of a ONE percent were involved in fatalities. That's absolutely amazing. South Dakota does a wonderful job directing an insane amount of people and and out and clearly marking all signs, curves, etc.

A few of the accidents were alcohol related and could have been 100% avoided, helmet or no helmet....

Any locals in those numbers? I have seen myrtle beach stats with locals 60 miles away put in. Obviously 60 miles in black hills is nothing but if not part of rally it's nonsense to me to include a guy going to work or in this car a car guy

You make a very good point, but it's actually better than what's stated:  12 deaths/1,000,000 attendees is a rate of .0012%.  A rate of .25% is over 200 times as much.

Yeah I was in a hurry, but you get the point. With that many bikes in the area it's unavoidable but I can't see them doing any better they do it so well. Hell, we've had 2 or 3 motorcycle deaths near me in the last month.

When we were there for the 70th Annie (2010). I thought they said there was 12 deaths. Mostly related to tire issues!! Its irrelevant - any deaths, SUCK!

I was surprised that the injury/death toll wasn't higher! I was there and I can't tell you how many times a bike would cross over the center line well into my lane! Not good!!
