Fluctuating gas gauge
« on: April 13, 2016, 09:45:43 PM »

While riding today my fuel gauge started to move drastically + - around the level it should register. I had approximately 1/2 tank and when accelerating would go lower than 1/4 and during braking register 3/4. It has never done that before. Any ideas or has anyone experienced the same issue?

There should be a resistor on the gauge to buffer the signal from the sending unit, I don't know for sure but we use a instrument repair guy the does many different type of repairs on gauges for the automotive side I can call him to see if he knows much on the Harley gauges.
But I would also call the dealer or even customer technical support at the factory, they most likely will have a better answer for you.

My 2009 B/O Roadglide CVO started doing the same thing around 5000 miles.  From reading over on Roadglide.org this seems to be a normal thing for these Harley gauges.  I simply purchased a new one and replaced it myself.  Sorry to hear you are having this issue.  If you are still under original warranty then Harley might cover it.  Otherwise it will be at your cost.  The gauge is very simple to replace.  Good luck!

Cheap gauge that doesn't have a sophisticated damping system.  If this is something that wasn't evident before but has become more obvious over time, it may be the gauge itself but it could also be the sending unit in the tank.  As the float system wears there is less mechanical resistance to the travel of the float.  A good sending unit float arm should move slowly when raised and then released, not just slam to the bottom.

Thanks guy's. I purchased the extended warranty and so far have been exceptionally pleased with the dealership that I bought the bike from and the repairs done there. I have a tech there that I request and I will get it in and let you know the outcome. I am needing the third compensator in 47,000 mi also. Thanks.
