Gaterman Failure

Roller seized took out the cam too. Lifter bores may need re-sleeved.

The pic isn't helping. Maybe my eyes are blurry?
How many miles? Which cam? What valve springs?
What oil?

Details, man

Picture is a little blurry but you can't see the flat spots?
Under 20,000 miles. Beehive valve springs, .625 lift cam, synthetic oil.

Those must be flat spots, but it can be difficult to figure what's just reflections.
I've heard some bad-mouthing of Gatermans' before but it sounded like most folks liked them.
I'm running Woods and I'm sure some have issues with them as well.
I wonder if the builders around here would give us any 'data' on the lifter that they get broken the least?

This isn't badmouthing, it's a fact they failed.

Just curious, which synthetic oil were you running?

I was under the impression that the Gaterman lifters were just a reworked Delphi lifter.  In other words, the same lifter body (and roller) Harley uses.  If that's the case, then it's not surprising to me that the roller bearings would fail.  :nixweiss:

No matter what the name on the box is, most lifters are made by a very small group of companies.  It's no different than many other parts these days, made by one company and sold under a dozen brand names.  I think some of us brought that up a long time back when people started making claims about various lifters being so much better than the Delphi stuff Harley uses.  One of the Gaterman offerings is definitely the same, not sure about the other part number they offer.  They may have tweaked the internal parts to fix the leakdown issues, but if they still use the original lifter body and roller, those other changes aren't going to fix the roller failure issues.

Gaterman sells 2 versions. The 1021, which I run, is the old HD b lifter.

The 1023 is their own design.

"The 1021, which I run, is the old HD b lifter."

Have seen a couple of those with the rollers flaking at 9000 miles.
