SERG 5sp rpm at 65 mph?
« on: August 03, 2015, 05:20:37 AM »

What is everyone pegging at around 65 mph?  I have read of a pulley change on the tourings for more low end grunt when modifying the motor and I am just checking to see if the previous owner has done this.

The 2000 and 2001 bikes will be the same here.  And they'll both have a higher RPM relative to any given speed than would a 2002.

To my personal tastes the 01 and prior Twin Cams keeping the same primary gear ratio as the earlier bikes was a mistake.  At 70-75 mph cruising down the road all day long the RPM is both higher than it needs to be for the engine that's driving it and high enough to be annoying and tiring to the rider.

In 2002 Harley used a different comp sprocket and clutch ring gear to lower the RPM.  Chain stays the same.  You can swap those parts and lower the cruising RPM this way or go with a six speed that has an overdrive top gear.

Don,

Going with the new 2002 gearing,  would essentially loose some of the "snap" I have now,  because it's taller gearing.  Maybe a swap out to a 6 sp would be a better idea. Damn, This bike is fun and frusturating all at the same time.   :drink:

It is a difference, but a small one.  You might alter your shift points just a bit.  Personally I did go with the six speed.  But I likely wouldn't have had I not gig a heluva deal on the gear kit.

My 2000 FXR4 had a 5 speed that was geared really tall. It had primary of 25 motor, 36 clutch basket,  32 transmission and 65 rear wheel. Overall ratio of 2.925. Bike ran 80 mph 5th gear at 3000 rpm.
Problem was at 65 it was revving in 4th or chugging in 5th. I now have a Rivera 6 speed O.D. gearset and a 30 tooth transmission pulley. My overall ratio is almost identical but I have more gears to pick from at various speeds. Much Better.  In hindsight I could have just put a 31 tooth on transmission and gotten good results much cheaper.  Your motor has the power. One tooth can make a big difference
