Highway Speed Braking Vibration
« on: September 05, 2015, 04:32:24 PM »

2014 SE Limited 10,000 miles. Get a vibration with medium or harder braking at highway speed. 50 and below is smooth. Low speed has no surging during braking (thinking rotors are fine). Put it on lift tomorrow when its cold. Too hot after all day ride. I got the linked brakes, but they are smooth usually.

Haven't checked anything yet, but it really feels like a wheel bearing to me. Like at highway speed there more pressure on them causing the vibration.?
Just guessing now but Anyone have idea?

My suspicion would be rotors before bearings.

Same issue on my 2013 CVO. Everything checks out. I have discovered that if I pump the brakes lightly before applying the shutter goes away. What the hell do ya want from a $40k bike...brakes that work properly? :). I feel the frustration. Going out for a ride now on my 67,000 mile, 2003 RK with original rotors. NO SHAKE!

Funny you mention pump the brakes.  Had my 09 in because the rear brake didn't feel right it was mushy.  Dealer said oh that's the way they are with ABS, just pump it a little its fine.  Standard answer.  Will dig into it myself and see what may be going on.

I have blead, cleaned, scotchbrited rotors, everything but change pad brands. It is just a chitty system IMO.

Measured both rotors. Got 2-3 thousands out of each. Spec is 8. Looked at steering neck, discovered no zerk fitting but also don't see anything wrong, swing back good, nothing loose, no clunk. Checked pads, plenty left, cleaned up calipers, pistons about halfway out, no burs, Spin wheel and with only wheel, I get this click click click noise. Like a numbers game at the fair. Bingo....Pull wheel, bearings fine. Spacer touching both bearings but can flop up and down still. Get bearing tool out and pull the right in a touch. Bearings still spin but kind of stuck together now with spacer, usually would pull right out a hair so they spin by hand independent, but figure I WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS.  Put all together, ride, no vibration. NONE.
Don't know if it was spacer, or dirt in calipers, no idea. Only happened at hi speed but was consistent with every hi speed front brake action.

Last year I had a 2010 limited with a bad NON-ABS bearing cause the voltage gauge to slowly go down and then bounce. SO all kind of magic happens up front I cant figure out why. But I am going with a loose spacer for now (set at factory, never touched or wheel off before, 10k miles).

Rear caliper only had one bolt. Not sure where he other one went but replaced with new bolt pedal feel is better.

Bike is under warranty, what did the dealer say? I know at least ten responses will tell be how bad dealers are and how there dealers couldn't find problems with whatever, but this is a warranty item if a problem exists so at least tell us what they actually said when you took it in.

I do my own work and had a ride so wanted to narrow down the problem before taking back. I cant find anything wrong to take it in now as the problem is gone for now. I will update if it returns.
